Mike Ybarra, the former president of Blizzard, has said that Rockstar Games can release Grand Theft Auto VI without having to worry about other publishers’ plans, believing other companies will move their release plans around the game when it finally gets a concrete date.
Writing on X in response to an IGN article about the GTA VI release date in wake of news that Borderlands 4 will arrive on September 23, 2025, Ybarra said that Rockstar doesn’t have to worry about anyone else’s plans:
GTA6 is the king. They don’t care who announces what. Everyone will move their release out of the way whenever they announce the ship date for GTA6. It is really the only game that has the power to do this today.

In response to a post stating that it would be beneficial for Rockstar and Gearbox to avoid clashing with GTA VI and Borderlands 4, respectively, Ybarra added, “[Borderlands 4] doesn’t matter. [Rockstar] is controlled by no one, including their publisher.”
Grand Theft Auto VI is currently in development for PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, with a release date set for Fall 2025. Publisher Take-Two has revealed during its latest financial results that it is still adamant the game will meet its release window, with CEO Strauss Zelnick adding that he expects GTA VI to cause a significant spike in hardware sales.
