Chains of Freedom: Everything We Know

Gamers have lots to look forward to in the coming year, thanks to over 70 trailers, announcements, and more at the PC Gaming Show: Most Wanted. Among the most exciting is Chains of Freedom, which, by the name, already piques interest. Get ready to empty rounds of ammunition into mutated monsters and human foes alike. You’ll be navigating battlefields in squads and restoring peace to your world. While we wait expectantly for next year, here is everything we know about Chains of Freedom so far.

What is Chains of Freedom?

Chains of Freedom is an upcoming turn-based tactics game. It’s a top-down shooter whose gameplay mechanics will be familiar to most gamers. It begs the question of what the game plans to do differently. In any case, based on Steam, the developers promise to take you on a captivating journey. You’ll engage in high-stakes combat, incorporating strategy in turns. 

With a group of fighters in your control, you’ll scour the dystopian grounds of fictional Eastern Europe, solving a deep conspiracy and pushing back the impending threat to the world. The battles will be intense, demanding that you plan ahead and think on your feet. All the while, you’ll face challenges that evolve the deeper you tread into the world.

Story

Chains of Freedom’s story will take place in a fictional state in Eastern Europe. You’ll be controlling an elite military squad on a mission to combat a threat that could potentially destroy the world. You’ll navigate challenging missions that test your ability to make impactful, morally conscious decisions. Missions will further be packed with betrayal and lurking danger. 

At the heart of the story will be a conspiracy that you will need to get to the bottom of. The conspiracy could be the threat that could make or break your country. 

Gameplay

To save your home, you’ll command your squad into high-stakes battles. These will use strategy and use a turn-based format. For every move you make, the combat will demand precision for the best outcome. 

Your team will have access to a wide assortment of weapons and protective gear. They will also access various skills, which can be applied differently to the challenges you face. As challenges evolve, you’ll need to learn and master your squad’s skills, aiming to succeed across increasingly difficult missions. 

Can you uncover the truth behind the dark conspiracy? Your country’s fate is in your hands. While you’ll be controlling a squad, the gameplay will be single-player. Here’s a deeper overview of the key gameplay features you can expect in the final game:

• Turn-based combat: Battles will evolve in turns as you strive to make the best decisions that make the most of your team’s skills and defeat your enemies. Using movement and gunplay, you’ll find clever ways to survive through to the end.
• Captivating story: It won’t just be one conspiracy but layers wound around a collapsing government, a rogue scientist, and mind control serums. While complex, the story will grip your interest, striving to overcome betrayal and save your country.
• Survive: Your squad will require the best weapons, including axes, flamethrowers, mortars, and meat hooks. They will also equip varied skills, and you’ll find the best combinations by experimenting with biocrystals. You can find ammunition while exploring the world as well as consumables like Molotov cocktails and healing kits. Combined, these tools and resources should help you make it through a brutal world.
• Post-apocalyptic world: Set in fictional Eastern Europe, you’ll explore a post-apocalyptic world on the verge of collapse. You’ll stumble onto intriguing mysteries and enjoy an atmospheric setting. Get ready to explore diverse biomes, ranging from desolate urban towns to military bases and tucked-away labs.

Development

Nordcurrent is leading the charge on the development of Chains of Freedom. The developer will also publish the game, drawing from their experience working on several casual games across multiple platforms. As an international developer and publisher, they have an impressive portfolio. Murder by Choice, Cooking Fever, and Action RPG Decision: Red Haze are just a few of the games they have worked on.

Trailer

Nordcurrent Labs has just launched Chains of Freedom’s official game reveal trailer. While it’s the first trailer, it does a great job of revealing vital information about the story and gameplay. On the former, the trailer expounds a lot more on the plot. A mysterious meteorite has crash-landed into Earth. Its impact left the world plague-ridden and has rendered both inhabitants and the world itself in chaos. 

But there’s a light at the end of the tunnel: a group of Guardians who must fight to cleanse the world of all who threaten to destroy it. While it’s only a small group of fighters, you have no other choice but to battle mutated monsters and traitors reaping off of the chaos. Will you restore freedom to a decaying world? 

While the story is definitely a familiar one, the accompanying gameplay does seem exciting. Here’s to hoping playing the game is fun. 

Release Date, Platforms, & Editions

Chains of Freedom is slated for a 2025 release window. While still largely unclear, we’ll be keeping our eyes peeled for a more specific launch date and let you know as soon as we know more. In the meantime, you can always add the game to your Steam wishlist to get a notification as soon as it drops. Alternatively, you can express interest in the game on Epic Games Store, PlayStation Store, or GOG. 

Chains of Freedom will be coming to PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X/S, and PC platforms.
