Now with added sweetener
- Candy Crush Solitaire is a new take on the classic card game with a sweet coating
- King are tackling the format, likely propelled at least partially by the popularity of Balatro
- It's set to release February 6th for iOS and Android
With the success of Balatro over the holidays, it's no surprise that some other publishers and developers are trying to get a slice of the action. But whereas we've seen rip-offs and shovelware "inspired" by this roguelike take on poker, King clearly sees the potential in the genre and is adding a sugary dusting of their iconic franchise to the upcoming release Candy Crush Solitaire.
As you might expect from the title, this is Solitaire but with an added bit of Candy Crush. You'll be playing the classic tripeaks solitaire, while also using boosters, blockers and a progression system sure to be familiar to fans of the iconic match-three series.
Candy Crush Solitaire is now open for pre-registration on iOS and Android. Pre-registering will net you some exclusive in-game rewards such as a special card back, 5,000 Coins, four undos, two fish cards and three colour bomb cards. Candy Crush Solitaire is set to release on February 6th for all platforms.
Candy crushing it?
King has definitely coasted on their mega-popular franchise for many years now, and unlike Supercell they don't seem to have invested too much in experimentation (I mean, why would you?) So I reckon Candy Crush Solitaire is partially them acknowledging the need to tread fresh terrain and explore new ways to grab their audience.
And as much as I do jest above, I wouldn't be surprised if the popularity of Balatro hasn't emboldened them just a little. Solitaire is, after all, a classic for good reason, and it's a much easier sell to a more mature audience (like Candy Crush has) than something new and flashy like Balatro.
