A new report from Kotaku points to 2K having fired Michael Condrey, the reportedly now former president of 31st Union.
31st Union was founded by Condrey back in 2019, with the studio based right in Silicon Valley in California. Back in October 2024, the team revealed its debut game, Project Ethos, a free-to-play, bright and colourful third-person extraction hero shooter, that tried to shake things up by adding rougelike elements to the gameplay.
It didn’t exactly set the world on fire when it was revealed, which may or may not have been why 2K has decided to part ways with Condrey.
“We are grateful to Michael Condrey for the dedication, passion, and work ethic it took to build an incredible team and shape the vision of 31st Union,” a spokesperson for 2K told Kotaku. “Michael will be transitioning his role in the short term to focus on advising on the future of Project Ethos. We remain very committed to the forward path for Project Ethos and the people and culture of the 31st Union studio.”
While 2K says it is “very committed” to the studio’s future, with how volatile it is to release a live-service game in today’s industry, we can’t be sure as to how 2K defines being “very committed.”
Concord was arguably one of the biggest flops ever in the games industry, and with the reported scale of the Project Ethos team reaching into the hundreds, with people working on this game for at least five years, it feels like Project Ethos flopping could come close to Concord’s level, should 2K decide to scrap it all together.
