While the gamified version of Lego Super Mario continues to expand with new and increasingly complex playsets, more traditional Lego sets inspired by the red plumber are somewhat rare. However, you can now pick up a new set featuring a caped Mario astride his trusty mount Yoshi. The $129.99 Super Mario World: Mario & Yoshi set includes some surprises that we’ll detail below, and joins the ranks of other cool Nintendo sets, like the Lego Super Mario 64 Question Mark Block and the iconic Lego Nintendo Entertainment System.
The new Lego set is currently only available through Lego’s online storefront, but this 1,215-piece set will soon be available through other retailers.
This flat, pixelated Mario and Yoshi are based on the 16-bit versions as they first appeared in Super Mario World for the SNES. The base of the set features a small crank which, when turned, animates Yoshi’s legs and arms, while a dial behind Yoshi’s head animates his mouth and tongue. Also, just like the Lego Super Mario 64 Question Mark Block and The Mighty Bowser sets, Lego Super Mario & Yoshi includes an action tag that provides unique reactions for Lego Mario, Luigi, or Peach figures.
