V Rising dev plans to “redefine” the survival game after hitting major milestone

2024 was a pretty amazing year for new survival games. While Ark 2 unfortunately went AWOL, we still had Palworld, Once Human, and more arrive. For me, though, the most intriguing has been V Rising, which emerged out of early access and enraptured survival fans with its haunting open-world, clever crafting, and castle construction. Developer Stunlock Studios has just revealed that V Rising has now surpassed five million copies sold and says that its slate of updates throughout 2025 will “redefine” the game.

When it comes to the essentials of survival games, V Rising delivers on everything you want it to. While plenty of its rivals can say the same thing, they don’t package everything up in a glorious gothic world and sprinkle some Diablo-esque RPG combat on top. Making a great survival game is one thing – making one that’s great and feels unique is a different challenge altogether.

V Rising’s plan appears to have paid off, because it’s rolling in positive reviews from players (on Steam it’s got an impressive 89% rating) and has now shifted five million copies. “Hitting five million sales isn’t just a number, it’s a testament to the passion and dedication of our team and our incredible community,” says Stunlock’s CEO Rickard Frisegård. “Our player’s enthusiasm drives us to push boundaries and deliver even more unforgettable experiences. We’re excited to build on this success and deliver thrilling new experiences and content in 2025.”

Speaking of 2025, Stunlock says that throughout this year it will “redefine” the V Rising experience with its upcoming updates. It’s already detailed a lot of its plans thanks to its preview of what it would be adding in version 1.1 of the game. These plans include adding a new region to its already sprawling map, a new faction, a new crafting system that will let you create incredibly powerful bespoke weapons, and support for “risk-free” PvP that will allow you to duel other vampires or engage in group battles without the risk of losing loot through death.

Stunlock describes all these improvements and new additions as “a vampiric evolution” for the game, so if you thought it was good now, wait until 1.1 rolls out later this year. If you want to dive into V Rising yourself for the first time, or just learn more about it, head to its Steam page here.
