Throne and Liberty confirms new surprise gear drops are a feature, not a bug

After some player confusion, Throne and Liberty publisher Amazon Games has made it clear that the newest loot drops in the MMO are a feature and not a bug. Now that update 1.8.0 is here, Amazon confirms that the set-bonus gear some players have been finding is “an intended change” to the long-term player experience, so you don’t need to worry about accidentally getting punished for utilizing a glitch. To avoid this level of confusion in the future, Amazon adds that it’ll aim to better communicate these types of changes going forward.

As someone who’s just entered the endgame grind in FF14, I know how important that overpowered loot is. It doesn’t matter where you get that next piece of gear, what’s important is holding onto it. That’s why this newest loot drop opportunity confused Throne and Liberty players, because Amazon failed to communicate that you could now get certain set-bonus gear from Abyss mobs in the MMO, which was previously not the case. Now it’s been cleared up, though, so no one’s in trouble.

“We’ve seen the feedback being provided related to certain set-bonus gear dropping from Abyss mobs when this was previously not the case. Some players were concerned this was a bug or an exploit. We want to confirm this was actually an intended change,” the official Throne and Liberty game status account writes.

“As with all updates, we will continue listening to the feedback you provide and make changes we believe will provide the best long-term benefits and player experience. As time marches on, we’ll continue to both add new types of gear and new methods to make older gear more accessible. We will work to better communicate these types of changes in the future and look forward to working together as we shape Throne and Liberty.”

Player confusion appears to have stemmed from the fact that this gear drop change wasn’t mentioned in the recent Throne and Liberty 1.8.0 patch notes. So if you started noticing extra loot drops from abyss mobs, you’d be forgiven for thinking this was some sort of glitch you could wind up being punished for. Luckily this isn’t the case, and the purple loot drops are actually a new feature.

There’s a lot on the horizon for the MMO, though, as we can already look forward to Throne and Liberty Castle Siege improvements alongside more changes. These colossal battles can feature thousands of players, each representing a guild, fighting for control of a stronghold, and around 45% of the structures changed hands during the MMO’s first run of the event. Players were abusing some unintended tactics during sieges, but these should be removed the next time the PvP event rolls around.
