Bloober Team’s remake of horror classic Silent Hill 2 isn’t afraid to poke fun at publisher Konami. Of the many changes and improvements included in the Silent Hill 2 remake, one of the most whimsical creative choices is a nod to a previous attempt to modernize the game in 2012’s Silent Hill HD Collection. That collection’s infamous usage of widely derided typeface Comic Sans is preserved in the Silent Hill 2 remake, but as an Easter egg for the most dedicated fans.

The Silent Hill HD Collection for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 had a long list of problems, which Konami never fully fixed. But one of the more comical unforced errors in that collection was the sign for Silent Hill Ranch, a location discovered early in Silent Hill 2. The developers saw fit to use Comic Sans as the ranch’s font of choice, a decision emblematic of the collection’s sundry problems. (The original Silent Hill 2 employed a simple sans-serif font for Silent Hill Ranch.)

Well, Bloober Team included that infamous sign in the Silent Hill 2 remake, which YouTuber GmanLives discovered by peeking outside of the normal boundaries of the game.

Silent Hill 2 players won’t actually see that terrifyingly remade Comic Sans sign in the game normally; they’d need to futz with the camera in the Windows PC version of the remake to spot it. It’s satisfying to know its there, nonetheless.

Bloober Team’s remake is full of small touches like this — changes that aren’t in-your-face, but welcome additions that respect the original Silent Hill 2 and small references to other Silent Hill games. Players will be able to dig into it for themselves when Silent Hill 2 is released officially on Tuesday, for PlayStation 5 and Windows PC.

Fans of the original Silent Hill 2 also have another great option: the Silent Hill 2: Enhanced Edition mod, which Polygon recommends.
