Hyper Light Breaker – January 14 [PC]:

Hyper Light Breaker Early Access Release Date Reveal Trailer

David Burdette – While I’m not the biggest fan of roguelikes, something about the stylings of Hyper Light Breaker grabs my attention. Maybe it’s the flair of the art style, which is unique to this series. It could be the class system and combat, which is fast and engaging. There are plenty of reasons to want to play Hyper Light Breaker, and as we discussed after playing it at Summer Game Fest, we just want to play more.

Donkey Kong Country Returns HD – January 16 [SWITCH]:

Richard Allen – Donkey Kong Country Returns easily sits as one of the best side-scroller titles in history so to see that it is getting a remaster is thrilling. After the success of Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze I had hoped it was only a matter of time before more side-scrolling entries in Donkey Kong’s library got the same treatment. I can’t wait to experience Returns again, this time in glorious HD!

Dynasty Warriors: Origins – January 17 [XB/PS/PC]:

Henry Viola – We all know the Dynasty Warriors 1 vs. 1000 formula. It’s a tried and true hack and slash experience that Omega Force and Koei Tecmo have learned to perfect over the years. The visuals look spectacular and the combat has been enhanced with perfect dodges and even parries! This is not to mention that I’m a complete sucker for the Three Kingdoms period of history. I’m really looking forward to the dynamic 1 on 1 officer battles that blend tactical gameplay with chaotic action.

Tales of Graces f Remastered – January 17 [XB/PS/PC/SWITCH]:

Tales of Graces f Remastered – Gameplay Trailer

Katelyn Lawlor – The Tales Of series was my main RPG during my years in college and Graces F in particular was special as I played the entire thing in co-op. Graces F getting remastered means more people get to experience the once Wii exclusive in a new form with some of the silliest characters with the coolest battle skills in the series. What Graces lacks in narrative depth, it makes up for in accessibility and a sense of humor.

David Flynn – I’m a big fan of the Tales of series, having started with the Tales of the Abyss 3DS port. That leaves quite a few titles I haven’t played, and Tales of Graces f is one of them. I’ve heard great things about the game, and can’t wait to experience what should be the definitive version of the game.

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth on PC – January 23

David Flynn – I may not have enjoyed Final Fantasy VII Rebirth as much as my colleagues, but it’s still a fantastic game with a phenomenal story and exhilarating combat. While the game looks and runs well enough on PS5, especially on PS5 Pro, if I’m looking to replay the game I’ll probably go for the upcoming PC version. Square Enix is pretty hit or miss on their PC ports, with Remake being a miss in my eyes, but if done well this could give the game some much needed visual clarity while maintaining at least 60 fps.

Star Wars Episode I: Jedi Power Battles – January 23 [XB/PS/PC/SWITCH]:

Adam Moreno – Jedi Power Battles was one of my favorite Star Wars games to come out on the PlayStation. Now, years later, I can jump back into the game with new characters and remastered graphics? Sign me up. It will be interesting to see what changes were made from the original to the remaster, including lightsaber colors, character dynamics, and more.

Tails of Iron 2: Whiskers of Winter – January 28 [XB/PS/PC/SWITCH]:

Tails of Iron 2: Whiskers of Winter - Release Date Gameplay Trailer | PS5 & PS4 Games

Richard Allen – The first Tales of Iron was one of my favorite games of 2021 due to its unique and brutally challenging gameplay alongside its wonderfully crafted world and intriguing story. From the gameplay revealed thus far of Tales of Iron 2: Whiskers of Winter, I have no doubt that it will far surpass even my most lofty expectations. For now though, I suppose I’ll just have to do another run through of Tales of Iron in preparation for part 2’s January release.

Eternal Strands – January 28 [XB/PS/PC]:

David Burdette – Eternal Stands makes me think of if Shadow of the Colossus meshed with Immortals of Aveum with a dash of recent Zelda games. The magical elements used to solve more than just combat is intriguing, and the massive bosses look to be a blast to figure out. If it can come out swinging, this could be a surprise hit right at the beginning of 2025.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 on PC – January 30

David Burdette – It won’t surprise you to find I’m pumped for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 to launch on PC. I loved the game in our review when it released on PS5, but I also loved the previous Marvel’s Spider-Man and Miles Morales ports which came to PC before. This is a definitive superhero game, and being able to experience it in higher performance and fidelity mode will be amazing. Insomniac and Nixxes always raise the bar with what wizardry they’re able to accomplish and this PC port will be no different.

Martin Du – I have fond memories of playing Spider-Man Edge of Time and the two The Amazing Spider-Man games on 3DS and Wii U respectively. Being able to play these ports of console quality games without being tethered to the TV was a treat. Thus as someone who recently got a Steam Deck, the prospect of being able to play the latest Spider-Man game on it feels like coming home. Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is already a fantastic game blending superhero thrills with a heartfelt story. But it’s the swinging that kept me coming back to the game long after I 100% it. Thanks to additional maneuvers and increased speed, I can only dread the amount of hours I will sink into this game web swinging around New York, now on the go.

Hello Kitty Island Adventure – January 30 [PS/PC/SWITCH]:

We Interview: CCO Tom Blind of Sunblink & Hello Kitty Island Adventure!

Olivia Davies – Mobile gaming has always gotten a bad reputation due to its overabundance in micro transactions and limits in gameplay. However, when Hello Kitty Island Adventure entered the scene, the cozy community was shaken. It not only had the look and charm of Sanrio’s colourful world, but the expanse of an open world and tons of activities to fill your days. It doesn’t look like a quick Animal Crossing repaint, but a game with lots to offer! In 2025 it’s finally coming to Nintendo Switch, which it’ll definitely shine in the already established cozy community.

Citizen Sleeper 2: Starward Vector – January 31 [XB/PS/PC]:

David Flynn – The original Citizen Sleeper was a very special game. One I’m not entirely sure how to describe, as it focuses mostly on time and overall health management while you try to not just survive but thrive after escaping a life of corporate servitude. All because your original decided to sell a copy of themselves in a robot body. It’s an incredibly interesting premise, but Starward Vector seeks to expand things greatly, with players getting their own ship to explore the Starward Belt.

Olivia Davies – Citizen Sleeper is so grounded for a game set in outer space, as it tackles incredibly deep themes through its narrative and characters. The protagonist is empty but moulded by the space ship they inhabit. Surrounded by prejudice and discrimination, you’re finding your own way to survive and to help others along the way. Its sequel follows your escape and the stakes are high, you meet new people along your adventure that are just as scared and desperate as you are. With the promise of a bigger world where you explore different hubs and a return of its intricately mapped player choice, Citizen Sleeper Starward Vector is sure to blow us away as it did before.

Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 – February 4 [XB/PS/PC]:

Kingdom Come: Deliverance II Official Story Trailer

David Burdette – Kingdom Come is not your typical medieval RPG. That’s why it’s so unique and captivating. Instead of a fantasy world with magic and dragons, you’ll find a historically based narrative of real people facing real problems. Henry returns in the sequel, and I can’t wait to see how this journey unfolds after the events of the original.

Sid Meier’s Civilization VII – February 11 [XB/PS/PC/SWITCH]:

David Burdette – I had a really crappy computer growing up. Even with it barely running many of the games of the time, Civilization was one I’ll never forget. Playing that on my own, or watching my dad play it, are some of my fondest memories. I don’t always have the time to dive into strategy games at this point of my life, but I’ll be making time for Civilization 7. While the formula doesn’t change that dramatically, there’s something about Sid Meier’s crown jewel that always pulls me back in. It’s a masterpiece in the genre, and 7 looks to continue that.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows – February 14 [XB/PS/PC]:

Unveil The Shadows: We talk with Assassin's Creed Shadows Associate Narrative Director Brooke Davies

Adam Moreno – After being pushed back, expectations are high for Shadows. The reveals during the Summer Game Fest showcase had me already feeling good about this game, however, knowing Ubisoft has taken extra time with it to perfect it has me even more excited. With a return to a more open world than Mirage and the two protagonists with completely different combat options, Shadows is on my list for most anticipated for 2025.

Martin Du – Having only dabbled in Assassin’s Creed with the likes of Black Flag, Unity, and Syndicate, everything I have seen of Assassin’s Creed Shadows has me interested. Syndicate in particular is my favorite of the ones I played, so I was excited to hear Ubisoft Québec being the ones to develop Shadows. The two leads with different gameplay styles appears to be an expansion on the dual protagonist foundation paved by Syndicate. And of course, the franchise finally exploring Japan has me excited to see what details Ubisoft puts into their rendition of historical fiction.

Tomb Raider 4-6 Remastered – February 14 [XB/PS/PC/SWITCH]:

Richard Allen – I greatly enjoyed the recent remastered versions of Tomb Raider I-III, and while it was expected to see further installments remastered, it was not guaranteed, so I am happy to see that some of the lesser played titles are finally getting the treatment they deserve so they can be fully experienced by a new generation. Tomb Raider 4-6 may not have had the same lasting impression on gaming history as the original trilogy did, but there are still tons of great moments in each game that are still well worth experiencing today.

Avowed – February 18 [XB/PC]:

David Flynn – it’s been over a decade since Skyrim came out, and if you’re like me you’ve been hungry for a fantasy RPG to capture that same magic. Well, Obsidian are absolutely the best people for the job. The Outer Wilds was their response to Fallout, and Avowed looks to be the same for The Elder Scrolls. Taking place in the Pillars of Eternity universe, Avowed looks to be a smaller, more intimate first person RPG. As the envoy of Aedyr, you’ll explore the Living Lands to save it and your own immortal soul from destruction.

Lost Records: Bloom & Rage — Tape 1 – February 18 [XB/PS/PC]:

We Interview: DON'T NOD team about Lost Records: Bloom and Rage!

Adam Moreno – Coming from developers Don’t Nod, Lost Records had its claws in me from the first trailer. The creepy surroundings with the very 90’s vibe filled me with nostalgia and dread, perfect for a fun time meeting fun characters and figuring out the mysteries involved with the town from your childhood. Reminded me, from the trailers, of a 90’s version of Super 8 and Stranger Things.

Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii – February 21 [XB/PS/PC]:

Katelyn Lawlor – Since Yakuza 0 in 2018, the series has blossomed into a multimedia franchise, with numerous high quality releases and now an attempt at naval combat and air combos? Sign me up. RGG Studios prove once again that they are willing to mix up their formula for the sake of freshness.

Pre-order now!

Monster Hunter Wilds – February 28 [XB/PS/PC]:

David Flynn – The Monster Hunter franchise has been going strong since the PS2 days, but really took off with the release of Monster Hunter World. World rethought a lot about the series, specifically its level structure as each zone was now a big open world for players to explore and hunt in. Wilds seeks to take that a step further, making the entire game one gigantic open world while also pushing the previously generic storytelling a bit further. Having played the beta literally until it shut down, I cannot wait to get back to the hunt.

Olivia Davies – Monster Hunter is a series that’s constantly evolving, from the grand landscapes of Worlds to the wire bugs and dogs that zip around in Rise there’s always something new to see and play around with. Despite its evolution, its core gameplay remains the same, hunt and slay monsters, which is as simple yet exhilarating as it gets. On your own you’re spending hours crafting armor and weapons to get better at bringing down the big beasts, but with other people you’re spending hours talking about strategies and bringing that monster down together. There is no other experience like it, Monster Hunter is the perfect multiplayer experience and Wilds looks even grander than its predecessors.

Two Point Museum – March 4 [XB/PS/PC]:

Two Point Museum | ... MUSEUMS!

Ron Burke – This is our third game from the Two Point team, a crew comprised of ex-Bullfrog and Lionhead alumni. This wouldn’t just be a simple pallet swap in a new location, though, but a whole new way to play. Expanding on the well-hewn mechanics of Two Point Hospital and Two Point Campus, Two Point Museum is certainly in the same universe, but the team has overhauled research, staff management, gift shops, and everything in between. Our hands-on preview gave us a taste, and we can’t wait to get our Cheese Gubbin-covered fingers on it when it hits in March.

Split Fiction – March 6 [XB/PS/PC]:

Richard Allen – Hazelight, creators of the critically acclaimed It Takes Two, looks to have another co-op hit on their hands with Split Fiction. In Split Fiction players must work together as writers Mio and Zoe to overcome challenges as they explore fantasy and sci-fi worlds pulled from their own writings. I had no idea this game was releasing next year until the trailer premiered during The Game Awards 2024, but you can bet that it has quickly shot up near the top of my most anticipated list.

Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition – March 20 [SWITCH]:

David Flynn – Xenoblade Chronicles X is something of the Xenoblade series’ forgotten step sister. It doesn’t connect to the numbered trilogy in any way (as of writing at least), and focused less on story and more on side quests, exploration, and an incredibly deep combat system. However, these are all things that made it one of the franchise’s best titles, and while fans have been clamoring for the game to come to Switch since the console was announced, it’s finally happening with the Definitive Edition. DE enhances the game’s visuals, completely reworking character models to be more in line with the other games art style, while also adding some brand new story content to follow up on that cliffhanger.

Tales of the Shire – March 25 [XB/PS/PC/SWITCH]:

Release Date Reveal | Tales of the Shire

Adam Moreno – Ever since I previewed Tales of the Shire at Summer Game Fest I have been READY for this cozy Hobbit-filled game to reach my hands. This game will have so much to look forward to including cameos from some of your favorite Lord of the Rings characters, many ways to decorate your Hobbit-hole, so many different ways of cooking, and much more! I’m ready for this game to take hours of my life from me.

Atomfall – March 27 [XB/PS/PC]:

David Burdette – Rebellion has long made games I enjoy, especially the Sniper Elite games. When the first trailer for Atomfall dropped, I thought it was another Sniper game, but then things started getting weird. This peculiar setting makes me think of Fallout mixed with Doctor Who, and if that’s all I’ve got to go on count me in. I’d expect some stellar gameplay at least, because Rebellion knows how to make an FPS sing.

The First Berzerker: Khazan – March 27 [XB/PS/PC]:

Corvo Rohwer – When I come across a game that has as much visceral combat as The First Berserker: Khazan does, I can’t help but take notice. Having soulsborne DNA while still making a name for itself, I had an absolute blast when I got to play the preview build. Taking on monstrous bosses with unrelenting attacks was so challenging, but overcoming them was beyond thrilling. I can’t wait to spill rivers of blood when the full game releases and bring the full force of my vengeance upon my foes.

The Hundred Line: Last Defense Academy – April 23 [PC/SWITCH]:

The Hundred Line -Last Defense Academy-: Extreme Despair Trailer

Martin Du – Kotaro Uchikoshi, writer of the superb Zero Escape and AI: The Somnium Files series, is my favorite writer ever. And I have played Kazutaka Kodaka’s popular Danganronpa series, and most recently Rain Code. These two legendary visual novel creators started their own studio a few years ago, Too Kyo Games, and their latest collaboration will be releasing April 2025. The Hundred Line mixes the abundance of death both these writers are known for, mixed in with Uchikoshi’s signature narrative element of playing with time. Sprinkled in with tactics gameplay by the creators of Wild Arms and developer of Valkyria Chronicles 4, this has the potential to be one of 2025’s hidden gems.

Afterlove EP [XB/PS/PC/SWITCH]:

Olivia Davies – From the makers of Coffee Talk comes Afterlove EP, a nostalgic narrative experience which follows a young musician after the death of his girlfriend. With a colorful cast of characters that are all here to help you through your lowest points, this game seems to be sweet but sad in the messages it’s going to convey. It also has a rhythm game element to it which will allow for some jam sessions, but probably a lot of cry sessions too. Sometimes you need those 2-3 hour experiences to rip out your heart in a flash and mend you back up, and Afterlove EP looks to be exactly that game.

ARC Raiders [XB/PS/PC]:

ARC Raiders | Gameplay Reveal

David Burdette – A month ago we FINALLY got a look at ARC Raiders gameplay. It’s looking pretty crisp, a multiplayer extraction shooter looking to break out in the space. I’m reminded somewhat of Star Wars Battlefront in its presentation and gameplay, and if it’s nearly as successful it’ll be a win. We’re still waiting on the first HUGE extraction shooter as it’s an emerging genre, and my eyes are certainly on ARC Raiders to see how its take is received.

Borderlands 4 [XB/PS/PC]:

Cassie Peterson – The absolute chaos and madness that is Borderlands is something that I just simply can’t get enough of. I have so much fun with any Borderlands game – well, I haven’t touched the Tales games yet – and I’m so excited to drop back into it again with a new story, new antagonist, and a new cast of Vault Hunters. Borderlands 3 boasted having over 3 billion guns. How many will Borderlands 4 have?

Capcom Fighting Collection 2 [XB/PS/PC/SWITCH]:

Katelyn Lawlor – Capcom’s back catalog of fight game greats is in no short supply, hence the sequel to one of the best collections they’ve released in recent years. Capcom Fighting Collection 2 brings a lot of hardly rereleased classics including Project Justice, Power Stone, and the VS SNK games. With rollback netcode and other extras, this is set to be a staple in the fighting game space, especially with that Power Stone 2 online multiplayer!

Chronos: The New Dawn [XB/PS/PC]:

Cronos: The New Dawn - Official Cinematic Reveal Trailer

Henry Viola – Bloober Team is back everyone! Cronos: The New Dawn is their newest IP and it looks absolutely amazing. The game is a unique blend of sci-fi and horror set in an alternate 1980s Poland. You play as a “Traveler” searching for “Essences” to potentially save humanity in this time-travel narrative. Gameplay seems to blend classic third person survival horror with weapons to defend yourself. I personally love the retro-futuristic aesthetic, so you can definitely count on me checking this one out!

Wishlist now!

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 [XB/PS/PC]:

David Burdette – I’m not usually much for turn-based RPGs, but the flair and gorgeous visuals of Clair Obscur have grabbed my attention. We don’t know exactly what’s going on in this odd and idiosyncratic world, but the outstanding style you see in the characters and enemy design are enough to intrigue. Add in some stellar voice talent like Ben Starr, Charlie Cox, and Andy Serkis, and it rounds out what might be one of the biggest sleeper hits of the year.

David Flynn – Unlike the other David, turn-based RPGs are one of my favorite genres of games, and Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 looks to be drawing from the best of the genre. It’s got the timed hits of Paper Mario and the dazzling AAA flair of a Final Fantasy. I haven’t kept up much with the game since its announcement, but that’s because I was instantly sold.

Pre-order now!

Crimson Desert [XB/PS/PC]:

Ron Burke – Every time we’ve seen a leak on this one it drives our hype a little higher. The extended gameplay tease we got at The Game Awards showcased a non-stop barrage of features including dragon riding, frenetic combat, magic, gorgeous graphics, and so much more. Frankly, you’ll probably have to watch the trailer several times just to take it all in. This one is coming at some point in 2025, finally, and I don’t think we’ve seen even the smallest slice of what’s ahead.

Wishlist now!

Cuffbust [PC]:

Katelyn Lawlor – Cuffbust looks to bring the silly and frantic fun of something like Lethal Company but give it a more humorous twist with a focus on doing things cooperatively. The numerous escape routes and proximity chat set this game up to be a mainstay in multiplayer sessions on Discord.

Death Stranding 2: On the Beach [PS]:

Death Stranding 2 On The Beach - State of Play Announce Trailer | PS5 Games

Jack Zustiak – As we all know, Death Stranding invented the concept of walking. Now Death Stranding 2 looks to expand on this concept in the most logical way possible: shooting electricity out of guitars at samurai robots powered by babies. Truthfully we don’t actually know much about how DS2 will expand its traversal-based gameplay right now. We just know that it will have cool cutscenes, character designs, music, and writing. Good enough for me! You gotta have a little faith that it’ll all work out when it comes to Hideo Kojima games, and I think if anyone has earned that faith it’s Mr. Kojima.

David Flynn – Death Stranding was one of those love it or hate it games, focusing almost entirely on traversal and it’s very Kojima story about reunifying America. From what we’ve seen of Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, the game seems to be leaning even more into itself, with even more bonkers story and much more walking. I’m all for letting Kojima run wild, and I can’t wait to see what he and his team cook up here.

Doom: The Dark Ages [XB/PS/PC]:

DOOM: The Dark Ages | Official Trailer 1 (4K) | Coming 2025

Jack Zustiak – There was a time when the concept of a modern Doom game felt inherently, well, doomed. Doom 2016 obliterated that perception like a horde of demons in front of a super shotgun. I was a big fan of the way it mixed the classic Doom elements with some modern stylings to create a new kind of Doom for a new era. Doom Eternal reinvented 2016’s ideas in ways both good and bad, ultimately leaving me hoping for the next installment to strike a better balance. If nothing else, the medieval stylings of Dark Ages make for a nice change of pace conceptually, so I’m excited to see where this new direction takes the first person action.

Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D [XB/PS/PC/SWITCH]:

David Flynn – Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake was a gorgeous and faithful recreation of the NES classic, and the remakes of I and II will most likely follow this trend. Seeing the Erdrick Trilogy again through chronological order makes for an interesting experience, and I’m excited to return to two more classic titles.

Duck Detective The Ghost of Glamping [PC]:

Olivia Davies – The first Duck Detective instalment only came to us in 2024, but in 2025 we already have its sequel, The Ghost of Glamping. I was instantly smitten with the game’ sticker aesthetic and quirky humor. You play as a deep-voiced duck who has to make his bread in order to keep his crummy apartment. This time, you’re investigating ghosts which already have the potential for hilarious disaster. The gameplay looks to be the same, which is simplistic yet fun to play around with. Solve scenarios, question witnesses, it’s the whole detective package but with its own unique personality and charm.

Dune: Awakening [XB/PS/PC]:

Dune: Awakening Direct – Episode 3

Ron Burke – Frank Herbert’s world of Dune is expansive, filled to bursting with political intrigue, ancient combat rites, the enigmatic and powerful spice, assassinations, royal bloodlines, trade and commerce, and so much more. Dune: Awakening looks to capture all of that in a new take on the MMO genre that will blend single player PvE, multiplayer PvE, multiplayer PvP, and PvPvE. That’s a whole lot of letters, but from what we’ve seen of the game so far, developer Funcom has the goods to bring it all together. You might not be the kwisatz haderach, but that won’t stop you from becoming a force the universe might have to sit up and notice.

Dying Light: The Beast [XB/PS/PC]:

David Burdette – Dying Light has grown to be one of my favorite franchises. Techland has done a marvelous job of honing in on a specific design philosophy in each one, and while there have only been two, The Beast already seems to be leaning in yet another direction. It simply looks brutal in all the best ways. With a summer release ahead, and this being a smaller scale experience, I can’t wait to sink some time into killing more Zombies with fan-favorite Kyle Crane.

Wishlist now!

Elden Ring: Nightreign [XB/PS/PC]:

Richard Allen – More Elden Ring is always welcome, and Nightreign looks to continue FromSoftware’s streak of excellent releases. While not much is known about Nightreign yet, the concept of a fast-paced three player co-op game which blends bosses and elements from FromSoftware’s diverse catalog into one adventure has all Souls fans salivating in anticipation. I’m already counting down the days until I can finally dive into the world of The Lands Between again.

Exoborne [XB/PS/PC]:

Exoborne - Gameplay Trailer

David Burdette – Storms are on the horizon. While it didn’t exactly pan out for Battlefield, I don’t see the same hindrances for Exoborne. The idea of an extraction shooter with exoskeletons is neat, but thrown in tornadoes and thunderstorms and it gets crazy. Every trailer I’ve seen piques my interest, and after seeing in-depth gameplay at Summer Game Fest (our preview here), I’m ready to bring my umbrella and dive headfirst into a gunfight.

Our preview | Wishlist now!

Fable [XB/PC]:

David Burdette – It’s been far too long since we’ve had Fable in our lives. Recent rumors have pointed to the game having a “Witcher 3” feel, and I’m all about that. The team at Playground has already shown their chops in crafting an open-world with the Forza Horizon series, and this could be their “Horizon Zero Dawn” moment. The tone of each trailer matches what I remember from Fable, so I can’t wait to see what’s in store.

David Flynn – Fable was one of those series that, let’s be honest, wasn’t very good. I enjoyed all three main games on their own merits, but it was always easy to tell each title was a compromised version of itself. And that’s not even taking into account the wild “promises” from interviews and marketing. With the series now in the hands of Playground, however, it’s possible this new Fable game might just fulfil the promise of the series: to live a life in a fantasy world. The closure of Lionhead was tragic, but I’m still excited to see how this new team puts their stamp on the franchise.

FBC: Firebreak [XB/PS/PC]:

Community First Look - FBC: Firebreak

David Burdette – I’m always up for anything from Remedy. This game does land outside their usual jurisdiction, a first-person co-op shooter with shades of Left 4 Dead. That said, I never count them out, as they always subvert expectations. With a world as rich as they’ve crafted, diving in headfirst as a Federal Bureau of Control agent to take out even more Hiss sounds like a great time.

Fighting Force Collection [PS/PC/SWITCH]:

Richard Allen – Ok, so it’s been nearly 15 years since I touched a Fighting Force game, but man, I have some great memories connected to this series. While it doesn’t seem like this collection is anything more than ports, I’m still excited to replay these titles and see how well they hold up in the modern age.

Ghost of Yōtei [PS]:

Ghost of Yōtei - Announce Trailer | PS5 Games

David Burdette – More of the Ghost of Tsushima world please. We already knew this game was being made by Sucker Punch, and now we’ve finally gotten a glimpse into the sequel. I didn’t expect such a large time jump, but the 300 year gap will allow for a lot of different gameplay mechanics and a fresh storyline to follow. If there’s one game I want in 2025, it’s Ghost of Yotei.

Adam Moreno – As someone not as well-versed in the genre, Ghosts of Tsushima not only taught me how to hold my own in games such as this, but showcased one of the most stunning worlds I’ve ever played through. Now we get a second one showing a completely different time period with Erika Ishii as the lead role? Take away another 80+ hours of my life, Ghost of Yotei.

Grand Theft Auto VI [XB/PS]:

Grand Theft Auto VI Trailer 1

Cassie Peterson – Who doesn’t want to live a life of high crime? Of course, without the risk of incarceration or death. Grand Theft Auto V broke so many video game records and is still played by thousands of people across multiple platforms. Grand Theft Auto VI already looks promising, with many callbacks to various pop culture and viral societal moments that continue to paint America in the best picture possible… This is definitely at the top of my must play list for next year, as long as it’s not delayed again.

GreedFall 2: The Dying World [XB/PS/PC]:

David Burdette – I’m cheating a bit with this one as it’s in early access, but it’s similar to how Baldur’s Gate 3 released. I’ve only had a taste of the game so far (our preview here), but everything it does whets my appetite for more. It’s more Greedfall, but even better, which is enough to make this something I can’t wait to play in totality.

Our early access impressions | Buy it now!

Hades 2 [XB/PS/PC]:

Ron Burke – This is on our most-anticipated list, but you don’t have to wait – you can nab it on Early Access right now. Developer SuperGiant Games is back with a sequel to the award-heavy Hades with a return to the Underworld. This time around we play as the immortal Princess of the Underworld, Melinoë. Melinoë is the daughter of Hades and Persephone and the younger sister to Zagreus, the protagonist of the first game. While this game will take us back into the world of Greek mythology, it’s also a story about the origins of magic itself. What’s already here in Early Access is worth the price of admission, so this one is going to be a banger on release.

David Burdette – All you had to tell me was that Ken Levine was involved and I was in. With all of the chatter around the game leading to Judas being a spiritual successor to his Bioshock franchise, it’s an even bigger deal now. If you’re all about immersive sims with insane levels of detail and a narrative you won’t find anywhere else, Judas looks like a perfect choice.

Light No Fire [XB/PS/PC]:

Ron Burke – It’s hard to not be hyped for the next project from Hello Games. The way they’ve turned around No Man’s Sky, and the endless parade of expansions and new ways to play bodes well for this new multiplayer-focused procedurally generated world “the size of Earth”. The team promises a full construction suite for their survival sandbox, with persistent buildings and communities to bring players together. Ambitious hardly covers it, but the Hello Games team has learned a lot of lessons that make me think they could actually pull it off. Cautious optimism keeps slipping into outright hype and excitement.

Little Nightmares 3 [XB/PS/PC/SWITCH]:

Richard Allen – The Little Nightmares series long ago cemented itself as one of the most unique and terrifying gaming experiences on the market and since its announcement nearly a year ago I’ve waited impatiently for the next installment. Little Nightmares 3 seems to be expanding on an already solid foundation and the inclusion of co-op should lead to many fun and creepy moments of teamwork. While no release date has been set, I am hopeful we will see this game within the next few months.

Mafia: The Old Country [XB/PS/PC]:

Mafia: The Old Country - The Initiation Trailer

David Burdette – I’m ready to get my gabagool on. The choice to send Mafia back to Italy and the 1900s in an origin story is inspired. I’ve always been a fan of the series, as the culture calls to me, but Mafia needed a reboot. This revival is a perfect starting point.

Marathon [XB/PS/PC]:

David Burdette – Now that the Final Shape has wrapped up Destiny 2, it’s time for Bungie’s next team to get in on the fun. While not technically original, Marathon is a completely brand new construct from this team, derived from the 1995 game of the same title. Marathon is aiming for the extraction shooter genre, and given their expertise in building FPS games, I’m willing to bet it’ll be a hit.

Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra [XB/PS/PC]:

Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra | Story Trailer

David Burdette – In Amy Hennig we trust. Her studio at Skydance New Media is doing some incredible work, especially in that first big blowout of a trailer. If the gameplay is as amazing as the motion capture, we’re in for a treat. Given the architect behind the first three Uncharted games is behind the helm, I have no concern in getting a mind-blowing narrative to go along with it.

Metal Gear Solid Δ: Snake Eater [XB/PS/PC]:

David Flynn – Snake Eater isn’t my favorite Metal Gear Solid game, but it’s pretty darn close. It’s a game I delight in replaying every once in a while, whether that be on the PS2, Vita, 3DS, or now the Switch and PC. While it might not change too much about the game overall, I’m excited to add Metal Gear Solid Δ: Snake Eater to that rotation. What we’ve seen of the game is absolutely stunning, and will hopefully modernize the controls just a bit more to clean off the last of that early-ish 3D jank. Now, if only they include Snake Vs. Monkey…

Metroid Prime 4: Beyond [SWITCH]:

Metroid Prime 4: Beyond – Announcement Trailer – Nintendo Switch

Jack Zustiak – Metroid Prime 4 means a lot to long-time Metroid fans like myself. Yeah I guess it’s nice to have a new Prime game after so long, but that’s not what I mean. I’m here for Sylux. Prime 4 will finally provide some answers regarding Metroid’s longest running mystery by providing some insight into this weirdo who keeps showing up at the end of Prime games. Who is Sylux? A robot? An alien? Just some guy? Samus’s long lost younger brother Solomon? The people want to know. And by people I mean me: the #1 Sylux fan.

David Flynn – I may be a newer Metroid fan, with Dread and Prime Remastered finally being the games to click with me, but that doesn’t mean I’m not stoked for Metroid Prime 4: Beyond. I still have a bit more to catch up in my Metroid Prime education (where are those Prime 2 and 3 remasters, Nintendo?), but I’ve heard fans begging for this game for years, and the sheer mythology of the title alone makes me excited it’s finally real.

Mixtape [XB/PS/PC]:

David Flynn – I’ll be honest, I don’t really understand what Mixtape is, but that only makes me more interested to finally play it. Whatever it is, it has a big focus on music, and that’s all I really need to know. The game looks and sounds fantastic, so I’m buckled in for this road trip no matter what.

Moonlighter 2: The Endless Vault [XB/PS/PC]:

Ron Burke – The first game asked the question “Hey, who stocks the shelves for all these would-be adventurers. It turns out, the answer is you! Crawling dungeons, you’ll slay monsters and then cart their goodies back to the surface to sell to warriors, wizards, and admirers who just want something shiny to collect. The team is back with a gorgeous fresh coat of paint, all new combat mechanics, and a ton of new monsters to slay/loot for their sale-able goods. Time to open the shop once again!

MOUSE: P.I. FOR HIRE | OFFICIAL CONSOLE ANNOUNCEMENT TRAILER

David Burdette – Excuse me sir, I have a mouse in my Bioshock? MOUSE: P.I. for Hire looks sublime, bringing a Steamboat Willie style to the first-person shooter genre. Not much is known about the story, or how it feels to play, but the artistic vision we’ve seen so far in trailers makes this one I need my hands on.

Ninja Gaiden Ragebound [XB/PS/PC/SWITCH]:

Jack Zustiak – Ninja Gaiden has been dormant for quite a while. While my own ninja senses told me that it would eventually make a comeback, I didn’t expect that it would be in the form of the first new 2D entry since the NES days. While those games were the definitive hardcore platformers for their era, Ragebound looks to be revisiting those roots and growing them in a new direction. Slick movement, detailed spritework, and a new protagonist set the stage for a new era of Ninja Gaiden that I’m excited to see unfold.

Phantom Blade Zero

Henry Viola – Chinese developers are starting to make a name for themselves in the triple A gaming scene. Phantom Blade Zero is the newest game from S-GAME studio and it looks absolutely stunning, with visceral action combat and beautiful visuals set in a wu-xia themed world. Black Myth: Wukong really started off strong for the Chinese gaming scene, and I’m excited for the next experience to see how it compares. Phantom Blade Zero’s parries look delicious and the bosses look challenging. This is definitely my cup of tea. No release date for this one yet, but I’m hoping 2025 is the year it sees the light!

Pokémon Legends Z-A [SWITCH]:

Pokémon Legends: Z-A – Coming 2025 (Nintendo Switch)

Adam Moreno – I really enjoyed Pokemon Legends Arceus, it was a fresh take on the Pokemon brand while staying true to the fun-loving nature the series has always had from game to game. My hope for Legends Z-A is that the team at Game Freak learned what worked and didn’t work from the first game and amp up what worked while finding creative solutions for what didn’t. This will be a highly anticipated game for any Pokemon fan, especially those who worked hard to complete the collection in Arceus.

Professor Layton and the New World of Steam [SWITCH]:

Olivia Davies – The Professor Layton series left us in such a raw and powerful moment in its last instalment, The Azran Legacy. A lot of its game packed an emotional punch that concluded most of its central plot points. The series was (to me) perfect and complete. And yet here we are going into 2025, with a new installment–we don’t talk about Katrielle anymore. It has enormous boots to fill and yet has the promise of replicating what Professor Layton used to be. Its style and appearance has definitely been revamped to my dismay, but the steampunk set pieces look grand and incredible. Its initial promotional art had me in awe. Its puzzle designer has also changed which is its core element which can frustrate or enthral players, but I’m hopelessly optimistic that this is the new start Layton needs after a line of failures in its spin offs.

REANIMAL [XB/PS/PC]:

Richard Allen – From the team that brought you Little Nightmares and Little Nightmares 2 comes a unique new co-op experience. While not much is currently known about REANIMAL, it is clear from the initial gameplay clips that it will be a worthy successor to the Little Nightmare franchise while carving out a terrifying horror experience of its own.

REPLACED [XB/PC]:

REPLACED Official Trailer 2

David Burdette – I was already sold on the visuals, but after playing Replaced at Summer Game Fest, I am all in on it. Replaced has an aura not many games create, and with a unique cyberpunk setting that draws you in. The combat, while simple, is a treat, and I just want to engage more in this world. Replaced is easily one of my favorite choices on this list.

Slay the Spire 2 [PC]:

Corvo Rohwer – Slay The Spire is easily one of the best deck builders around, with a flavorful dash of roguelike elements for garnish. It’s one of those games that has become a timeless classic, and playable on pretty much every modern option whether it’s a console, PC or mobile. I’ve sunk hundreds of hours into hundreds of runs, so when I heard that Mega Crit were working on a sequel, I knew that there was potential for another masterpiece. With new characters, cards, relics and more, I simply cannot contain my excitement for Slay The Spire 2 when it enters early access in 2025 and see just how broken I can make my deck.

Solasta II [PC]:

Adam Moreno – I knew nothing about Solasta before the trailer we saw during The Game Awards. Everything aesthetically has me excited and looking at Solasta from 2021. With the success of Baldur’s Gate 3 and the new Divinity 2, Solasta II might be coming out at the perfect time to scratch that specific game style itch. We’ll hopefully see more and more as we get closer to release about just what all Solasta II has to offer.

South of Midnight [XB/PC]:

South of Midnight - Gameplay Reveal - Xbox Games Showcase 2024

Adam Moreno – After a fabulous gameplay trailer during Summer Game Fest, my excitement for South of Midnight has been through the roof. The first trailer set the tone with the music and creepy atmosphere, then the recent showcase followed it up with fast paced action and some comedy! The mixture of the setting and style has me ready for anything South of Midnight might have in store for us in 2025!

SPINE [XB/PS/PC]:

David Burdette – Gimme all the John Wick infused combat. SPINE’s combat looks so gratifying, the ballet of violence a sight to behold. Besides that, Nekki has pulled in composer Le Castle Vania, whose music is featured in the John Wick movies. While imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, this is exactly the kind of game I want to play; a perfect choice of mimicry.

Splitgate 2 [XB/PS/PC]:

David Burdette – Portal meets Halo is back. This time, 1047 Games isn’t just doubling down on the formula, but tweaking it to suit esports. If you are all about competition, Splitgate 2 looks like it’s going to tickle that fancy. I just hope you don’t mind it doing so with projectiles.

Subnautica 2 [XB/PC]:

Subnautica 2 - Teaser Trailer

Ron Burke – Wow did Subnautica and its offshoot impress us time and again. A bright and cute surface with big-eyed creatures belies the dark and dangerous behemoth creatures that lurk below. This was a game that just kept building from strength to strength, and the sequel adds the one element that was missing prior to now – friends. Building an underwater research base, constructing vehicles, and exploring the inky blackness all over again? Sign us up. The game will hit Early Access in Spring of 2025. If you’re reading this, Unknown Worlds, please support VR again – I’d love a side of existential Lovecraftian terror with my exploration!

Terminator: Survivors [XB/PS/PC]:

David Burdette – We don’t know nearly enough about Terminator: Survivors. Nacon is behind it, but Teyon has departed, meaning this game will be a bit different. Survivors is, as the name states, a survivor genre game, where you’ll be building outposts and trying to endure oncoming Terminator threats. Given the game can be played co-op as well as solo, I’m certain the allure of fighting Terminators will be too much for myself and Editor-In-Chief Ron Burke to pass up.

Terrifier the ARTcade Game [XB/PS/PC/SWITCH]:

Richard Allen – I’m a sucker for beat ‘em ups, even if most rarely bother to mix up the admittedly stale formula they follow. Still, I can’t help but be excited for Terrifier the ARTcade Game due to its over the top violence, co-op potential, and just the fun the developers can have by tapping into ART’s twisted mind. No release date is set yet, but this is one I am definitely keeping an eye on.

The Alters [XB/PS/PC]:

The Alters | PC Gaming Show Most Wanted 2025 Trailer

David Burdette – This is another one of those ideas that is somehow unique as far as gaming narratives. What if a catastrophic crash forced you to immediate action because the planet you landed on would fry you if you weren’t careful? Well, using an element on the surface to make a bunch of clones of yourself might help. Even weirder, these variants are quite literally variants – other versions of you that made different choices in life. It sounds weird, but is exactly the kind of eccentric variation we need more of in gaming. Also, more of Alex Jordan.

The Dark Pictures Anthology: Directive 8020 [XB/PS/PC]:

David Flynn – The Dark Pictures Anthology took some wild swings, and while season 1 mostly missed we did get the gem that is House of Ashes, a story about alien vampires and also America’s invasion of Iraq. The first title of season 2, Directive 8020, looks like yet another wild swing, and I really hope they hit it out of the park again. A choice focused horror game is a fine balance to walk, but Supermassive has done it before, and I believe they can do it again.

The Mermaid Mask [XB/PS/PC]:

Olivia Davies – The Detective Grimoire series is a series of detective games that follow Sally and Grimoire taking on different mysteries in towers, swamps and now submarines. What drives these games for me is its main duo and varying cast of characters, they always pop out in design and personality. This time you are finding the murderer of the submarine’s Captain and it’s one of the crew among you. Its voice acting and soundtrack is always a step above its competitors and deserves a lot more recognition than it gets.

The Midnight Walk [PS/PC]:

Olivia Davies – The Indie industry flourishes in the horror department, we got so many greats in 2024 and The Midnight Walk is another Indie horror that looks to be at the top of its game. The unique clay animation style is already a massive selling point in its capability to create some grotesque and disturbing set pieces. You won’t know what horrors will lurk in the darkness, but I’m already committed to helping this little lantern guy through these murky dangers. The game is divided into 5 ‘tales of darkness’, hopefully suggesting a strong yet weird narrative experience.

The Outer Worlds 2 [XB/PS/PC]:

The Outer Worlds 2 - Official Gameplay Trailer | The Game Awards 2024

David Flynn – Given the capitalist hellscape we live in, you wouldn’t think trying to further exaggerate a dystopia would be as fun as it is. But putting late stage capitalism in space IS a lot of fun, as The Outer Worlds demonstrated. We’re not really sure what The Outer Worlds 2 is about yet, but Obsidian makes great games and I trust fans won’t be disappointed by this one.

David Burdette – In Obsidian we trust. We’re already getting what looks to be a great fantasy game in Avowed in 2025 from them. If things break the way they should (meaning no delays), The Outer Worlds 2 should offer even more of that Obsidian charm. The original is the best blend of hilarious hijinks, incredible storytelling, and engaging combat, all in a compact package. The Outer Worlds 2 should be more of that, and that alone makes me excited.

The Sinking City 2 [XB/PS/PC]:

David Burdette – The tremendous Frogwares team is back and bringing their acclaimed Sinking City franchise with them. This time, however, it’s getting a bit more creepy. The first trailer shows the team diving into the horror genre headfirst, seemingly inspired by the more dreadful tone of the Sherlock Holmes: The Awakened Remake. Frogwares generally hits the mark, so I look forward to seeing what they’re cooking up.

Tron: Catalyst [XB/PS/PC/SWITCH]:

Disney TRON: Catalyst - Announcement Trailer | PS5 Games

David Burdette – Definitely wasn’t expecting this announcement. The minds behind Tron: Identity – a visual novel – have a new Tron game coming out that is a top-down action game. I’m not mad in the slightest, as Bithell Games is bringing disc-throwing, light cycle driving fun in 2025. Given how intricate the story behind Identity was, I can’t wait to see how they add that to Catalyst as well. Gimme my neon jumpsuit, I’m ready to hit the grid.

Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2 [XB/PS/PC]:

Ron Burke – This one has been in the cooker for a bit, cycling through several developers and against several delays. Somehow, I’m not worried. Publisher Paradox Interactive is taking their time to ensure this is a worthy sequel, and developer The Chinese Room is more than capable of not only getting it across the finish line, but also injecting the splash of horror that’ll make this game special. We’re seeing updates on the regular from the developer, so the “first half of 2025” window looks more than plausible. We’ve waited a long time for this one, but all indicators point to it being very worth the wait.

Winter Burrow [XB/PC]:

Winter Burrow - Developer Commentary

Olivia Davies – Winter Burrow is making me really jealous of what I can’t have this December, a cozy survival game where you play as a mouse whose mission is to restore your childhood home. This is a giant compliment of course as I’m so excited to play this game, it’s a perfect Winter game to play as you drink your hot chocolate. But don’t let the idea of playing as a little mouse fool you, this game is transparent in letting you know that the world is cruel for prey, especially when faced with the cold of winter. However, this balance of cozy and realism is exactly what makes this game interesting, investing in keeping my little mouse alive is exciting and scary!

Wuchang: Fallen Feathers [XB/PS/PC]:

Henry Viola – You might be thinking… Yet another Soulslike game? Wuchang: Fallen Feathers looks absolutely stunning, and I’m excited to see more games dive into Chinese mythology as we don’t see enough of them. The game is set in a dark fantasy version of China’s late Ming Dynasty, blending historical elements with supernatural twists. The combat looks sleek and refined, and if the trailers do the actual game any justice at all, then I think we are in for a treat!
