2 weeks ago 65

What are the best Space Marine 2 mods? Space Marine 2 could be the greatest Warhammer 40k game ever, and naturally, it deserves a mod list that matches its prestige. From performance enhancements to quality-of-life tweaks, modders have pulled the game apart, remodeling it to bring even more glory to Ultramar.

While the Space Marine 2 mods list will only grow over time, with even more sophisticated tweaks sure to come, we already have a solid collection available for the co-op game. If you’re hoping to bolster the game’s performance, give it a visual makeover, or even take your Operations character into the main campaign, then behold our humble mod menagerie.

If you’ve ever been worried about installing Space Marine 2 mods fearing a potential ban, we have good news to share with you. Dmitriy Grigorenko, Space Marine 2’s game director, has confirmed in a forum post that not only are mods encouraged, but modding tools will be released in the future to help support creators. From December 2024, you won’t be able to enter public matches with mods installed, so remember to disable them if you want to fight against random players.

The best Space Marine 2 mods are:

Astartes Overhaul

Take your Space Marine 2 experience to an entirely new level with the Astartes Overhaul mod from Warhammer Workshop, adding new enemies, weapons, and reworked gameplay to the mix. Warhammer fans will appreciate the level of accuracy that has gone into this mod, ensuring the weapons have been rebalanced with the lore in mind.

The developers of the mod have been responding to player feedback, adding in requested features and tweaking the gameplay based on reports. There are now weekly updates for supporters of the mod, giving fans access to new features before being added to Nexus Mods. Astartes Overhaul improves the original gameplay so much that it feels like a mandatory addition to the game. If there’s one mod you download from this list, let it be Astartes Overhaul.

colorful marines during a campaign mission

Campaign Ops

While carving up Carnifex with Lieutenant Titus is quite the power fantasy in itself, wouldn’t it be even cooler to run the campaign gauntlet once more with your own marine? Well, fortunately, the Campaign Ops mod lets you do just that, adding the campaign missions to the Operations menu. Our friends over at Wargamer have already tested it and given their seal of approval, so get stuck in.

Operations Arsenal Unlocker

If you’ve ever found yourself thinking, ‘darn, I wish I could slap the Thunder Hammer on my Sniper build,’ now you can thanks to Operations Arsenal Unlocker! This fabulous little mod will completely remove the operator restrictions on weaponry, letting you customize your loadout to your heart’s content.

 anti-stutter

Anti-Stutter

To say that Space Marine 2 has had a bit of a rocky launch would be an understatement, as many of our friends have reported issues running the game – some have even refunded it. Nonetheless, if you’re hoping to have the best possible shot at getting the game running properly, or even bolstering its smoothness if you haven’t been affected too badly, then Anti-Stutter has your back. This simple registry edit will enable high CPU priority for Space Marine 2, ensuring it is drawing everything it can from your processor.

 Disable Screen FX in practice

Disable Screen FX

Considering the Tyranid-trampling nature of Space Marine 2, it’s easy to get overwhelmed by the sheer number of monsters and UI elements bombarding your brain. Fortunately, Disable Screen FX allows you to strip back on-screen effects like vignetting and the pulsating red screen you see when low HP. It can even remove letter boxing, chromatic aberration, and lens distortion from Space Marine 2’s cinematics, offering a clean, full-screen experience while enjoying the ungodly amount of testosterone present during cutscenes.

Noclip mod in practice, with a wide FOV of a battleground

Noclip

Space Marine 2’s photo mode may be pretty good by default, but there’s always room for improvement. Noclip offers such room and then some by dramatically increasing the flying distance of photo mode, allowing you to take your in-game snapping out of bounds. Enjoy documenting the horrors of war!

 a bloodied up Space Marine

Blood

Blood, blood, gallons of the stuff. My Chemical Romance-ism aside, Blood is a simple mod that ensures the guts of your prey remain smeared all over your armor like a haematic medal for longer. It’s not the fanciest mod on our list by any means, but it brings a smile to our faces.

How to install Space Marine 2 mods

When it comes to modding Space Marine 2, there are two ways we’d recommend. Primarily, we’d suggest using a mod manager like Nexus Mods’ Vortex to keep things simple. However, if you’re a bit more old school then you can manually pop the mod files into the game’s directory.

Space Marine 2 modding method one (Vortex)

  • Download Vortex here and install it.
  • Go to games > unmanaged games and select Space Marine 2.
  • Once set up, head to Nexus mods, find the mod you want, and download it via the ‘Vortex’ option on its page.
    • The mod will be enabled by default once downloaded.
  • Start your game from Vortex by clicking the launch button in the top left corner.

Space Marine 2 modding method two (manual)

  • Head Nexus Mods, find the mod you want, and choose the ‘Manual’ download option.
  • Extract the file(s) to the game’s root directory. You can download WinRAR here if you don’t already have it. For reference, the root directory of your game is in the following places by default:
    • Epic:
      C:\Program Files\Epic Games\Space Marine 2
    • Steam: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Space Marine 2
  • Move the file(s) into the appropriate sub-directory/directories based on the instructions given on the mod page. You may have to make new folders, so pay close attention.
  • Once installed, launch your game as normal.

It’s important to note that there’ll typically be a set of required dependencies that you’ll need to download first to get your mod working. You can find these in the ‘requirements’ drop-down box in the ‘description’ tab for the mod. Some modders also note these in the ‘files’ tab.

Note: If you use Epic Games, ensure you have ‘enable mods’ toggled on. You can find this setting by clicking the settings cog next to the Space Marines 2 play button.

And those are the best Space Marine 2 mods we’ve found so far. To really boost your in-game experience, make sure you’re rocking one of the best Space Marine 2 builds available. If you’re unsure what the best Space Marine 2 weapons are, meanwhile, check out our dedicated guide.
