Sub-zero city builder Frostpunk 2 reveals three DLCs in new roadmap

While there are plenty of great city builders out there, few are as gritty and unique as Frostpunk 2 – well, apart from its predecessor, obviously. With an emphasis on not just building an impressive metropolis but surviving the fierce cold of a post-disaster Earth, it’s got a feel that is hard to emulate. A couple of months on from its full launch, developer 11 bit Studios is now charting a course for the future with a brand new roadmap that spans the next two years of the game’s life. Like the original Frostpunk, three big DLC expansions are planned and a free major content update is on the horizon too.

Certainly one of the best city building games to release in 2024, Frostpunk 2 has already gone down pretty well with fans. Admittedly, it didn’t launch in a perfect state, and 11 bit has pushed out a fair few hotfixes to improve things. However, given that it turned a profit after just a few days and continues to see peak Steam player counts of around 1,000 people per day, on the whole it’s been a success.

However, as great as the sub-zero city of New London is, players will eventually want some new adventures. That’s where Frostpunk 2’s three DLCs will come in. According to 11 bit’s new roadmap, the first two – codenamed Spectrum and Aurora – will arrive in 2025. The third, which is currently without a codename, will be hitting the game in 2026.

While 11 bit isn’t revealing any details at all about what these expansions might entail, it does promise that “each DLC will add something completely new to the harsh world of Frostpunk 2.” If you already own the Deluxe Edition of Frostpunk 2, or you pick it up in the future, you’ll get access to all three of these premium DLCs at no extra cost. Or, you’ll be able to purchase them individually as and when they arrive.

Before these DLCs arrive, though, Frostpunk 2 will receive a free major content update that delivers features “inspired by [players’] feedback.” The game will also come to consoles. Both the major update and the console releases are also slated for 2025.

Even sooner than all of that, however, is patch 1.2 – a smaller but significant update that will bring “various gameplay and interface changes” to the game. More details on patch 1.2 are arriving “very soon,” according to 11 bit. You can read the developer’s full announcement about the new roadmap here.
