In 2022, Jim Carrey announced his retirement following his return as Doctor Ivo Robotnik in Sonic the Hedgehog 2. At the time, Carrey left open the remote possibility that the right script could get him back, but he said, "I have enough. I've done enough. I am enough." Carrey broke his retirement for Sonic the Hedgehog 3, and it wasn't because of the script. Instead, Carrey had a more relatable reason to go back to work.
"I came back to this universe because first of all, I get to play a genius, which is a bit of a stretch," Carrey told AP Entertainment. "And... I bought a lot of stuff and I needed the money, frankly."

— AP Entertainment (@APEntertainment) December 10, 2024That's a refreshingly honest answer from the actor, who has a dual role in the sequel as Dr. Robotnik's dad, Professor Gerald Robotnik. The elder Robotnick also has a direct link to Shadow the Hedgehog (Keanu Reeves). Since 2016, the only movies that Carrey has been in are the three Sonic films. Prior to this franchise, Carrey resisted offers to return for sequels to most for his movies, although he did appear in an Ace Ventura sequel and Dumb and Dumber To. The producers behind Sonic the Hedgehog also indicated that they would not have recast Robotnik if Carrey had declined to return.
In addition to Carrey and Reeves, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 features Ben Schwartz as the voice of Sonic, alongside James Marsden, Tika Sumpter, Idris Elba, Colleen O'Shaughnessey, Natasha Rothwell, Shemar Moore, and Adam Pally from the previous films. Krysten Ritter and Alyla Browne also joined the cast as G.U.N. Director Rockwell and Maria Robotnik, respectively.
Fans who want to see Sonic the Hedgehog 3 early can buy tickets to a special event. For everyone else, the film opens in theaters on December 20.
