Resident Evil 4 is The Most Successful Remake of All Time at 16.8 Million Sales – Rumor

As commonplace as remakes have become, no one can deny their success. Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced is a great example, with over 3.5 million sold in just two weeks. Meanwhile, Halo: Campaign Evolved’s secret ending indicates that Halo Studios will continue down the remake path. That’s not even getting into the likes of Silent Hill 1 Remake, Resident Evil Veronica, Final Fantasy 7 Revelation and more coming down the line.

But it does beg the question: What have been this generation’s most successful? Alinea Analytics estimates it’s Resident Evil 4 Remake, which has reportedly sold 16.8 million and generated $560 million in revenue. The last official figure from Capcom was 13.6 million sold as of March 31st, 2026, so this wouldn’t be too far off.

What’s surprising is that ARK: Survival Ascended is apparently in second place with seven million sold. It’s followed by The Last of Us Part 1 in third with 6.3 million reportedly sold. So even if it seemed baffling, remaking the classic to coincide with the TV show proved a viable strategy. Then there’s The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered and its alleged 4.5 million sales. Would that have been higher if Virtuos hadn’t abandoned support? Or did it abandon support after reaching this milestone? It’s hard to say.

Either way, expect even more remakes in the future, given that they bring in the sales. On the bright side, if they turn out to be as enjoyable as either Resynced or Campaign Evolved, then we should be in for a fun time.
