Blizzard Entertainment was reportedly toiling away on a mobile version of Overwatch in the past, though it's unknown whether the project is still in active development. A new book about the acclaimed developer--titled Play Nice: The Rise, Fall, and Future of Blizzard Entertainment--drops the little nugget of info about the hero-shooter series.
In the book, author Jason Schreier references an Overwatch mobile project when talking about Walter Kong. Here is the passage from Play Nice: "Overwatch was led by Walter Kong, who oversaw the release of regular heroes and content for Overwatch 2 as well as new projects, like a mobile version of the franchise."
There has been no official comment on a mobile edition of the Overwatch franchise. Overwatch 2 launched last year as a free-to-play game for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch. The title offers cross-platform play, so it's possible a mobile project would be the same experience but for smartphones and tablets, or it could be something completely different, if it still exists at all.
Schreier, a reporter for Bloomberg, chronicles the 33-year history of Blizzard in his recently released book. Microsoft officially acquired Activision Blizzard almost a year ago exactly, so it's important to note projects and priorities could have shifted with the ensuing changes.
Play Nice also reveals new details about why Blizzard's Titan was canceled. The MMO was apparently two different experiences: an action superhero game on one hand, and a Sims-adjacent title on the other. Bringing these concepts together under one umbrella was reportedly one of the culprits for Titan getting canned. However, some of the action superhero part was repurposed for Overwatch.
Later this month, Overwatch 2 will get a new anime crossover with My Hero Academia, featuring five hero skins. Last month, the hero shooter got exclusive Game Pass benefits for the first time. For more, check out GameSpot's Overwatch 2 review.
