Miasma Chronicles: Everything We Know

1 year ago 84

The Bearded Ladies (yes, The Bearded Ladies) has formally announced Miasma Chronicles, an all-new tactical turn-based RPG that’s seemingly set across a post-apocalyptic United States. Going by the facts, the 505 Games-published title will be gearing up for a May 23rd launch on consoles and PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store.

So, what more do you need to know about it? Well, here’s everything we’ve been able to gather on the matter, from its story to its gameplay, and all the elements sewn between the crevices. Miasma Chronicles: what is it, and why should you be keeping tabs on it ahead of its May release?

What Is Miasma Chronicles?

Miasma Chronicles is an upcoming tactical turn-based RPG by The Bearded Ladies, a studio best known for Mutant Year Zero, yet another tactical RPG based on a well-known tabletop game. Instead of infusing elements from a tabletop source, however, Miasma Chronicles builds a world for itself—an almost post-apocalyptic-like America that’s split between humans, robots, and a “savage force known only as the ‘Miasma.'”

In this latest venture, players embark on a quest as Elvis, a wayward child who travels alongside his robotic brother in search of “answers they crave”—solutions pertaining to the dreaded Miasma that shrouds the wastelands of post-modern America. Equipped with a glove that allows him to “control” the Miasma, players will venture forth and seek answers, ones “which may change the course of human history forever.”

Story

Set in Sedentary, a mining town cast beneath the spoils of a shattered America, Miasma Chronicles casts you as Elvis. Left at birth by his mother and in the care of a robotic ‘brother’, Elvis receives a glove—a curious item that supposedly allows for him to control the Miasma, a brutal force that wreaks havoc on the world and all its citizens. In a desperate attempt to uncover answers, Elvis and his adopted brother set out to secure a solution that may just “change the course of human history forever.”

In The Bearded Ladies’ words: “In the not-too-distant future. America has been torn apart by a savage force known only as the ‘Miasma’,” the blurb reads in part. “Meet Elvis, a young man brought to the mining town of Sedentary as a baby. Left by his mother in the care of a robotic older ‘brother’ and given a mysterious glove with which he can control the Miasma.”

“Join the brothers on a quest across a post-apocalyptic wasteland to find the answers they crave. Answers which may change the course of human history forever.”

Gameplay

So, what can we expect from the gameplay side of things? Well, according to The Bearded Ladies, Miasma Chronicles will blend realtime exploration with tactical turn-based combat, as well a variation of RPG elements. To this end, you can expect a pretty familiar blueprint—one that fuses the likes of XCOM, Wasteland, and Mutant Year Zero into a single post-apocalyptic vessel.

Going by the book, players will have the opportunity to upgrade their weapons and abilities to help gain an edge during combat. Given the fact that you’re also equipped with a glove that lets you supposedly control the Miasma, this could mean having an enormous variation of powers at your disposal, too. But don’t take our word on that.

Development

The Bearded Ladies first announced Miasma Chronicles back in the beginning of 2022, at which point it chose to shed light on the game in the most traditional way possible — via a trailer. Since then, the studio has essentially been up to its knees ironing out the creases ahead of its planned 2023 release. Oh, and not to mention working on several trailers to help flesh out its world and the characters.

Built with the intent of bringing the game to next-gen hardware, The Bearded Ladies announced that it would be shaping up for an Xbox Series and PlayStation 5 launch. Does this technically mean it won’t find its way to Xbox One and PlayStation 4? Only time will tell on that one, it seems.

Like what you see? If so, then you’ll be pleased to know that The Bearded Ladies has already released a trailer for the game. And not just that, but several previews containing information on the story, characters, and its setting. You can go ahead and catch the initial announcement trailer in the embed above.

Release Date, Platforms & Editions

Miasma Chronicles will be heading to Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store on May 23, 2023. Will it be coming to ex-gen consoles following the initial launch? It’s hard to say at this point, as The Bearded Ladies has kept relatively quiet on the matter. But that isn’t to say it won’t arrive on Xbox One or PlayStation 4 in the distant future, though.

At the time of writing, neither The Bearded Ladies nor 505 Games have mentioned anything about special editions. As it stands, you can only purchase a digital copy on consoles or PC. That said, the devs did say that physical copies would be launching at some point later this year. So that’s something.

Bad news, Cloud fans. As it turns out, Miasma Chronicles will not be coming to Xbox Game Pass or PlayStation Plus as a day-one exclusive. But this doesn’t mean it won’t be in the future, though, as a lot of games tend to gravitate towards either of the two in the year or so following the initial launch.
