New soulslike FPS Covenant already channels the best parts of both genres

I love a good genre mashup. There’s just something about taking multiple tried and true categories of videogames and throwing them together, potentially creating something unique in the process. Well, this is exactly what the newly revealed Covenant does, by taking the world of Dark Souls and blending it with the fast-paced FPS combat of games like Doom. So if you’re looking for something new, this is one to keep a close eye on.

Developed by Legion Studio, Covenant is an upcoming dark fantasy soulslike FPS game. If you like fast-paced shooters like Titanfall, Ultrakill, and the modern reimaginings of Doom, you’ll be right at home here. You can slide under enemies, jump off walls, side-step, and even roll around during a fight. Unlike most shooters though, you’re instead using swords, crossbows, and an array of dark fantasy weapons that pack a mean punch.

But what does the rest of Covenant look like? According to Legion Studio, you’ll be fighting gargantuan bosses, solving puzzles, platforming, and upgrading your weapons and spells as you go.

If the Dark Souls and FromSoftware inspirations weren’t obvious enough from the above trailer, Legion Studio adds that Covenant has an interconnected world to explore. You’ll be able to discover shortcuts, use keys to open hidden routes, and explore for secretive rewards around every corner.

The soulslike system where you choose to one or two-hand your weapons is also present, giving every tool – be it a sword, crossbow, hammer, or bow – multiple uses. You can easily adapt to any situation, while Legion Studio adds that “two-handing unlocks powerful abilities on the weapon but leaves you less mobile.”

Legion Studio also says that you’ll be able to play through the campaign in co-op, and that there’s also going to be a PvP system present. These duels will take place in 1v1, 2v2, or 3v3 arenas, where you and your team will need to prove you’re masters of both the combat and movement mechanics.

Legion Studio has no Covenant release date just yet, but you can wishlist it on Steam to stay in the loop. Simply head right here.
