Martial arts open world RPG Where Winds Meet launches soon, but not for everyone

Where Winds Meet looks absolutely breathtaking. The Chinese martial arts open-world RPG has a real eye for set pieces, vibrant nature, and the supernatural in a way that immediately caught my attention. Developer Everstone Studio first showed Where Winds Meet at Gamescom 2022, but talk of launch has been largely quiet ever since. Now, we know that Where Winds Meet is set for release incredibly soon, but not for everyone just yet.

If you’re excited about the Where Winds Meet release date, I have good news and bad news. The good news is that it’s coming to PC at the end of this year, but the bad news is that right now, that’s only in China. So we’ll more than likely be waiting until 2025 to give it a try ourselves.

Where Winds Meet is a Wuxia (a genre of Chinese fiction involving martial arts) open-world game, and easily one of the most stunning I’ve ever seen. Set during the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms period, this was a great time of upheaval for 10th-century China. You still have to figure out your character’s identity amid the historical turmoil, but at least there’s the backdrop of a gorgeous open world. You can check out a new trailer below (via Gematsu).

You’ll be using a mystical power to run up sheer cliff faces and across bodies of water while exploring the world, with a clear focus on smooth movement. Everstone Studio also says you can acquire martial arts skills by observing and mimicking animal behavior, so you’ll breathe fire like a dragon, jump like a toad, and even roar like a lion. There are also plenty of Wuxia weapons in the game, like the Spear, Sword, Fan, Dual Blades, Umbrella, and Glaive – all of which you can use in unique combat encounters.

As you explore the land in Where Winds Meet, you’ll also come across diverse NPCs, puzzles, and what Everstone Studio calls “Wuxia stories.”

Where Winds Meet comes to PC in China on Friday December 27, with the iOS and Android versions released around the Chinese New Year (Wednesday January 29). There’s currently no word on the Western release date yet.
