A good keyboard is just as critical to your PC gaming experience as a good mouse. Of course, what is and isn’t a good keyboard is an in eye of the beholder opinion because different people like different things, but what we can all agree on is that the keyboard needs to be practical, functional, and, dare I say, aesthetically pleasing? Logitech unveiled a whole new lineup of hardware last month, including the Logitech G915 X line of keyboards. Today’s specimen, the G915 X LIGHTSPEED wireless mechanical gaming keyboard, is a full-sized keyboard that is packed with the latest and greatest in Logitech technology to elevate how you play.
In the box, you’ll find the keyboard, USB receiver, USB extender, and USB-C data/charging cable. The cable is around three feet long, giving you enough flexibility to have it plugged in to charge when you’re in the middle of a gaming session. With this being a wireless keyboard, you have to flip the little switch found along the top left edge to begin using the device, even when you’re plugged in, which took me too long to figure out (user error). The keyboard will likely already be half charged when you receive it, so you can hop right into your next game as soon as you’re all set up, but you should check out the G Hub beforehand to make sure it is fully updated and to make any customizations.
There are three layers of customization with Logitech’s new KEYCONTROL technology in the G Hub app, including Base, FN, and G SHIFT layers that can easily be switched between with the press of a button. On top of that, thanks to multiple events and modifiers, up to 15 functions can be assigned to a single key. I can’t even fathom a reason anyone would need that many functions on a single key, but the option is there if I ever find one.
The keycaps are a very low-profile, laptop style, making it easier to move your fingers around the keys when you’re typing or gaming. There are three options for key styles as well – tactile, clicky, and linear – although the tactile is the only option for the white model. I personally prefer the tactile, however, as it’s a super soft sound that doesn’t distract me when I’m trying to focus and it doesn’t get picked up by my microphone as easily when streaming. The keys have a short 1.3mm actuation point, total travel distance of just 3.2mm, for a higher action per minute that is also backed up by 2.4GHz LIGHTSPEED wireless, Bluetooth, or wired connection, so you shouldn’t ever miss a click, even in the most intense battles or gunfights.
The G915 X LIGHTSPEED boasts some incredible battery life, which can also be monitored in the G Hub. With the RGB at full brightness, you’re looking at around 36 hours, around 90 hours if RGB is reduced to 50%, but if you turn off RGB entirely, you can get up to 800 hours of battery life (the TKL model goes up to 1000 hours). Seeing as I most definitely don’t play even four hours per day, I wouldn’t need to charge this keyboard for probably close to a year, as long as I remember to switch off the power when it’s not in use.
The Logitech G915 X LIGHTSPEED packs all of that performance into a slim form factor. It’s about 18.7 inches long, 5.9 inches wide, and just under an inch high when flat, and it weighs only 38 ounces. It can easily be stowed away, moved around, and taken on the go with little to no hassle. It’s made of high quality materials, like the double-shot PBT (Polybutylene terephthalate) keycaps, which are textured and less likely to shine over time from usage. The top plate is brushed aluminum, which looks sleek and clean, especially on the white model. It also appears that the keyboard is water resistant, which I discovered quickly after accidentally knocking over a glass of water onto it. Still works like a champ!
Of course, all of this awesomeness comes at a cost. The Logitech G915 X LIGHTSPEED mechanical wireless gaming keyboard sits at $229.99, though it will ship for free if ordered from the Logitech website. It is backed by a 2-year limited hardware warranty, however, so rest assured that if your keyboard experiences a mechanical problem, Logitech has you covered.
I genuinely have no complaints about this keyboard. It has far surpassed my expectations, propelling Logitech to the forefront of my gaming hardware considerations. But even gaming aside, this keyboard has been great to use when writing reviews or working on other projects. The price is definitely worth it when you look at what all this keyboard has to offer, especially since its predecessor was $249.99 at launch and this one is $20 less. There were no sacrifices made and we have all the world to gain!
