The adorable yet comical rom-com series Komi Can’t Communicate took the anime world by a silent storm when its anime adaptation aired in 2021. But even before its anime success, the manga already built a loyal fanbase. And now, after nine years of serialization, the manga officially comes to an end.
Komi Can’t Communicate, penned by Tomohito Oda, debuted on Shogakukan’s Weekly Shonen Sunday magazine in May 2016. The manga ended with Chapter 499, which is available in English on VIZ Media. While the manga released weekly chapters via Weekly Shonen Sunday, the chapters are compiled into 36 tankobon volumes, though the final chapters are yet to be included.
The series received an anime adaptation in 2021. The first season had 12 episodes, airing from October to December of that year. Its huge success warranted another 12-episode season, which came out in April 2022 and ended in June of the same year. In addition, the manga also won the 67th Shogakukan Manga Award for the shonen category in 2022.
Netflix licensed the anime for worldwide streaming. But while all episodes can be streamed via the platform, availability may vary depending on region.
What is the Komi Can’t Communicate manga about?
Komi Can’t Communicate follows the story of the high school student Hitohito Tadano, a total wallflower who doesn’t have a knack for reading social situations. Even though his social interactions were scarce, Tadano preferred it that way. He believed it was the key to maintaining a peaceful school life. However, his peaceful days instantly ended after he met the aloof Komi.
By being seated next to Komi, who immediately became the school princess, Tadano was targeted by jealous stares. But when he was left in a room with her, he realized she wasn’t naturally cool. Instead, she was just super socially awkward. After a brief confrontation, he took it upon himself to help her achieve her dream of getting 100 friends.
