It’s not a stretch to say that millions of people worldwide are familiar with Colonel Sanders and his secret blend of spices that helped him establish the global fast-food chain, Kentucky Fried Chicken, or KFC for short.
Sanders himself has always been the icon and character associated with the brand, and has appeared in multiple forms of media, including games.
He also could’ve appeared in Tekken 8 as a guest character, if KFC hadn’t said no to the idea when Tekken creator Katsuhiro Harada asked.
In an interview with TheGamer, Harada confirmed that he’d wanted to see the Colonel fight in his game, and went to the KFC offices in Japan with a pitch. It was not at all well received.
“A long time ago, I wanted to have Colonel Sanders from Kentucky Fried Chicken fight,” Harada said in the interview. “So, I asked to use Colonel Sanders and go to the head office in Japan.” Harada then admits he was given a “bad look” along with his no, and decided not to fight it.
Lead game designer Michael Murrary adds to the story, saying “[Harada] went to Kentucky Fried Chicken and tried to get Colonel Sanders. They weren’t very open to the idea. [Colonel Sanders] appeared in games after that. So maybe it was just him fighting against someone [that] was posing a problem for them. But it just goes to show how difficult these types of discussions are.”
