How to get Gigantamax Pokémon in Pokémon Go

Gigantamax Pokémon are massive, powerful forms of Pokemon in Pokémon Go.

Similar to Dynamax Pokémon, which also debuted in the main games as part of Pokémon Sword and Shield’s Galar region, Gigantamax Pokémon are encountered in Max Battles.

But while Dynamax forms only increase a Pokémon’s size, the more powerful Gigantamax transformation also changes their appearance, as well as gives them unique G-Max moves.

This pages explains how Gigantamax Pokémon work in Pokémon Go and how to get more Gigantamax Pokémon, plus includes the list of all confirmed Gigantamax Pokémon so far.

What are Gigantamax Pokémon?

Gigantamax Pokémon share many characteristics with Dynamax Pokémon, in that they are a separate form of Pokémon that are found in Max Battles. This means you cannot Gigantamax existing Pokémon in your collections, even if they are Dynamax Pokémon.

Found at Power Spots during certain periods, these higher tier encounters are some of the most challenging in Pokémon Go, requiring a large number of people to battle.

Once caught, Gigantamax Pokémon can be used in Max Battles, including against both Dynamax Pokémon and other Gigantamax Pokémon.

You can tell a Gigantamax Pokémon at a glance by the unique symbol in your collection, or the Pokémon’s stats screen, which has a “Gigantamax” drop-down below their weight, height, and typing information, as shown in the image above.

Similar to Dynamax Pokémon , as well as standard Fast and Charged moves, there will be three Max Moves to unlock, including a G-Max attack exclusive to that form.

At present, you can only get Gigantamax Pokémon from Max Battles — by first battling and then catching them in the subsequent catch phase.

Gigantamax Pokémon are considered ‘six star’ encounters due to their difficulty, and as such, can be fought with up to 40 players at once (albeit with trainers split into teams of four, as shown in the above image). Even with the higher player count, be sure to bring your best counters at the highest levels to put up a decent fight.

As with all Max Battles, only Dynamax or Gigantamax Pokémon may be used in these encounters. Gigantamax battles also require Max Particles to enter, costing 800 MP upon completion (meaning, if you fail, you’ll be refunded the entry fee).

Gigantamax Pokémon will also only appear in Power Spots for a limited time, usually around weekends or special events. You can see the upcoming Gigantamax schedule at the end of this page.

Gigantamax battle rewards

Once the encounter is complete, you’ll be rewarded the following:

  • XP
  • Consumable items (including the likes of Golden Razz Berries and XL Candy)
  • Premier Balls (used to catch the Gigantamax Pokémon you just fought)

As with Dynamax Max Battles, you can double the rewards — including the number of Premier Balls to be used in the subsequent catch phase — using PokéCoins.

And, similar to Dynamax Mx Battles, you’ll then be able to:

  • You can place a Dynamax or Gigantamax Pokémon in the Power Spot, which will then assist others in their Max Battles for a limited time before returning to you. If this is a Gigantamax Pokémon, then there will be a chance Dynamax Pokémon can spawn around that Power Spot.
  • The chance to catch the Gigantamax Pokémon you fought in the Max Battle, using the set number of Premier Balls offered, before it flees.
