What are the best sci-fi games on PS4? If you're in the mood to explore some otherworldly science fiction, PS4 has plenty to offer across a wide spectrum of genres.

Sci-fi has been prevalent in video games since the very beginning, and it's as intriguing a setting as ever. Whether it's the far-flung future of Earth in Horizon Zero Dawn, the unexplainable oddities of Control, or classic space operas like Mass Effect, there's so much brilliant sci-fi to dig into.

As with all our lists, though, deciding the best sci-fi games on PS4 comes down to you lot. Our community's user ratings determine which games appear on this list, and in what order. You can directly impact this list by leaving your own user ratings on sci-fi PS4 games using the search bar below:

It should be noted that a game will need at least 50 ratings before it will appear in this list, so if a favourite isn't here, it may just need more people backing it.

All that said, let's get into the best sci-fi games on PS4, as determined by the Push Square readership.

20. PREY (PS4)

PREY made a valiant attempt to revitalise the franchise, and while it wasn't a big sales success, it remains an engrossing sci-fi thriller. You wake up aboard a mysterious space station, where you're the test subject for the betterment of humanity. Obviously, things go very wrong, and the station is overrun by hostile aliens. Featuring unique enemies, a non-linear location full of details, and imaginative new weapons, it's an atmospheric, tense first-person adventure that'll get under your skin.

19. Overwatch (PS4)

Overwatch has been superseded by Overwatch 2 now, but it was one of PS4's tightest and most kinetic first person shooters. Blizzard's team-based multiplayer FPS combined excellent gunplay with top tier character design to deliver an endlessly entertaining experience. Each hero was totally unique, and they all complemented each other with crazy abilities that were easy to learn but hard to master. Pretty much everything great about this game has carried over to its successor, but many will fondly remember the original and how it evolved people's expectations of multiplayer shooters.

18. Control (PS4)

From the makers of Alan Wake comes Control, a third-person action game that's as strange and unsettling as it is fun. Playing as Jesse Faden, you enter the Federal Bureau of Control's mysterious headquarters, and quickly become ensnared in a bizarre turn of events involving otherworldly entities and dimension-shifting environments. With a mix of impactful gunplay and neat supernatural powers, it's a challenging but fun sci-fi action title that isn't afraid to get really weird. There aren't many games like this one.

17. Resogun (PS4)

Housemarque is a studio known for its arcade games, and Resogun remains one of its best. Like a modern day Defender, you're tasked with blasting away screens full of baddies while rescuing the last of humanity. It's a gorgeous shoot-'em-up with responsive gameplay, endless replayability, and supremely satisfying visuals. If you like a good old fashioned score-chaser, get Resogun played.

16. Stray (PS4)

Cat lovers agree: Stray is a delight. This game has you playing as a little cat who winds up lost in a mysterious walled-in city inhabited by robots. You're lured in by the novelty of playing as a nimble feline, jumping across rooftops and knocking things to the floor, but you'll also be hooked by a surprisingly intriguing sci-fi narrative. Featuring lovely presentation some dense places to explore, this short but sweet game is a treat.

15. Alien: Isolation (PS4)

Alien: Isolation may have somewhat overstayed its welcome, but its nail-biting survival gameplay perfectly captures the claustrophobic tone of Ridley Scott’s iconic 1979 sci-fi movie. Assuming the role of Amanda Ripley, the daughter of series protagonist Ellen Ripley, you’re stalked from start-to-finish by the series’ deadly Xenomorph. Up against impossible odds, the game constantly keeps you on your toes, as you’re forced to slip past the enormous extraterrestrial unnoticed. It’s a completely unique experience that hasn’t really been replicated since.

14. WipEout Omega Collection (PS4)

The granddaddy of anti-gravity racing makes a triumphant return to PlayStation with a gorgeous remaster that brings together content from WipEout HD, Fury, and 2048. The fast and fluid racer plays beautifully, looks gorgeous, and runs like a shiny, metal dream. The recently added VR support is incredibly well implemented too, making this an even better package for PSVR owners. While we’d have preferred an all new entry in the franchise, this serves as a great reminder of why WipEout is so beloved by fans.

13. Titanfall 2 (PS4)

Responding to feedback from the original Xbox exclusive, Respawn Entertainment added a full-length campaign to Titanfall 2 – and it’s one of the better shooting encounters you’ll find on the PS4. With high-octane gameplay that really shines in multiplayer and a great blend of intense on-foot action and mech-based bedlam, we’re grateful that EA managed to bring this series to Sony’s system eventually.

12. Detroit: Become Human (PS4)

While so many interactive dramas cheat, Detroit: Become Human is the most adaptable narrative ever conceived. Lead characters can die in the opening hours of the story, and that’s the last you’ll see of them for the remainder of the campaign. The robotic revolution plotline can be a bit heavy-handed, but as with all Quantic Dream games, there are some real high-points that will stick with you long after the credits roll.

11. Ratchet & Clank (PS4)

This reimagining of the very first game in the series was made to accompany the movie, but ended up totally eclipsing it. Blending a familiar adventure with some new weapons and gadgets, Ratchet & Clank is both nostalgic and fresh. It's a visual treat, with exquisite animation and fun shooting/platforming gameplay. This is one gorgeous adventure that both fans and newcomers will adore.
