Guerilla Games Meticulously Made Sure The Lighting Across All Of Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered Was Right

Guerilla Games is a week and a day away from its next game release at time of writing, with Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered arriving on Halloween 2024.

It’s not a totally brand new game, sure, and it’s yet another remaster/remake from a PlayStation Studios team. But it’s also a chance for Guerilla to go back to a game that started a new era for them, and really make it shine like it never has.

And make it shine they have, particularly with improvements to lighting in the game, which was something that studio director Jan-Bart van Beek talked about on Twitter, and the meticulous process Guerilla undertook to do it right.

Part of what made it so meticulous, Beek explains, was that pretty much every night, when the team would leave the office they would leave “30+ PlayStation dev kits” running something called “autobot,” which would go through the game and take thousands of screenshots all set at different times within the game world.

Sure, taking the screenshots was all automated – but it was the teams job to then comb through those screenshots the next day and make sure everything was exactly how it was meant to be.
