GTA 5's Free PS4 to PS5 Upgrade Available for All Players Now

Update [Thu 18th Jun 2026, 7:45pm]: You can now upgrade your PS4 copy of GTA 5 to the PS5 version free of charge. This works with both physical and digital copies of the game.

Digital owners, simply go to the hub of your game and you should find an option to download the PS5 version free of charge.

Physical owners, you’ll need to insert the Blu-ray into your console and wait for it to install. Then, as above, navigate to the game hub and download the PS5 version free of charge.

Do note, if you’re upgrading using a physical copy, you will need to hold onto the Blu-ray and insert it every time you want to play the game.

Original Story: We know from a recent GTA 5 leak that there are still almost two million active GTA Online players on the PS4, but it looks like Rockstar is going to make one last attempt to transfer fans to new consoles before GTA 6.

As part of a wider announcement which includes a major new GTA Online update – more on that shortly – the label has announced plans to offer a free PS5 upgrade for all existing GTA 5 owners. This includes both physical and digital copies.

Beginning tomorrow, 18th June, anyone who owns a PS4 copy of the game will be eligible to upgrade to the PS5 version free-of-charge.

This, according to Rockstar, includes “vast technical improvements, easy migration of your Story Mode and Online progress, and new features including Hao’s Special Works high-performance vehicles and upgrades, Career Progress rewards, and much more”.

It’ll also be the best way to experience GTA Online’s latest update, the Kortz Center Heist, coming in July.

Here’s how the publisher describes it:

“Perched on the hills of Pacific Bluffs, the world-famous Kortz Center looms large over the Los Santos cultural scene. Priceless international works of art have adorned its hallways for years, and now the time has come to raid this prestigious gallery’s esteemed collection for personal gain in The Kortz Center Heist, this summer's exciting new update coming to GTA Online in July.

To accommodate burgeoning interests in art theft and counterfeiting, you’ll need to add the Art Studio to your Mansion property, then scope out the sprawling Kortz Center complex before choosing an approach for this multi-stage Heist infiltrating and escaping the grounds.”

I’m personally really tired of GTA Online’s dreary mission design now, but hopefully this heist is fun – especially as it’s likely to be the last. (Although I’ve been writing that about GTA Online updates for years now.)
