1 month ago 37

Hero shooters abound in the gaming world. From Overwatch to Team Fortress and Apex Legends, gamers are spoilt for choice on that front. So, for FragPunk to also want to dabble in the same sea, it makes you wonder what the upcoming game plans to do differently to make you want to check it out. Well, FragPunk is planning to merge hero shooter and deckbuilding. Specifically, you’ll be choosing cards that have the power to bend the rules of combat to your will. Intrigued yet? Well, check out everything we know about FragPunk below to get up to speed with what’s to come.

What is FragPunk?

Broker

FragPunk is an upcoming fast-paced, 5v5, hero-based, first-person, hero-shooter game with a twist. It’ll feature “powerup cards,” which you can use to change the rules of each round you play. Gameplay works pretty much like any other hero shooter: pick your fighter, choose your weapons, and kick ass. However, you’ll also be able to choose from a deck of cards, with each card having the power to change the rules of the game.

Story

FragPunk’s story is a little barebones at the moment. All we know is that you’ll be able to choose from a selection of heroes. Each hero will likely have unique weapons and plastyles. But more so, you’ll have cards, which you can use to change the rules of combat. The cards will likely give you an upper hand, so you have to choose wisely if you are to come out on top.

In total, FragPunk will have ten heroes to choose from, each with unique abilities. You’ll also choose from a wide assortment of weapons, with the freedom to customize them to your liking. Weapons will be 15 in total. Some weapons will have special abilities, too, like a higher fire rate or energy burst. We’ll be sure to keep an eye out for any new information on the story and let you know as soon as it comes up.

Gameplay

In FragPunk, you’ll use cards to tip the scales of combat in your favor. That means that every round of combat in the game will be different, depending on the cards you pick. With over 70 “Shard Cards” available, the variety of playstyles is likely to be over the top. What’s more? You can make the cards shuffle automatically and, in turn, create new and unique combos with limitless possibilities.

Individual cards will have unique abilities. Some of them include increasing how high you can jump, reversing roles between attackers and defenders, transforming your bullets into lightning bolts or fire, resurrecting you and your teammates, and many more.

Above all, FragPunk will thrive on speed. It’ll craft fast-paced battles that last roughly 2.5 minutes per round. With a tight cap on time to kill the opponent, you want each shot to count. You’ll also need to react quickly, whether attacking as soon as you spot an opening or defending yourself from incoming fire.

As far as combos go, you’ll need to find the best combinations between the hero, weapon, and cards you choose. This creates infinite possibilities, with at least one playstyle suited for every gamer.

Lastly, battles will take place on “immersive maps” with “vibrant visuals.” According to FragPunk’s Steam store page, the upcoming game will feature “rich map designs and mixed visual effects, including collages, graffiti, and a blend of realistic and stylized textures.” The 4 total maps in the final game will have “bold colors, sharp shapes, and dynamic lines,” providing a distinct feel while bullets fly.

Development

Developer Bad Guitar Studio is currently working on developing and publishing FragPunk. Bad Guitar Studio is a subsidiary of Thunder Fire Studios, which is a subsidiary of NetEase Games. FragPunk will be Bad Guitar Studio’s debut game, which means a lot will depend on its success.

FragPunk’s first announcement was made at the Xbox Games Showcase 2024 event. Since then, we’ve had a trailer and Steam Store Page to ease our minds on development, and so far, so good.

The team seems as excited as we are, with creative director and producer Xin Chang saying, “FragPunk‘s card mechanic is a literal game changer, and we can’t wait to see players surprise us with their own unique combinations of cards, heroes, and weapons, round after round.”

By all means, check out the official announcement trailer for the upcoming FragPunk. It showcases the stylized art style and squad-based combat you can expect in the final game. Players will take on opponents from a first-person perspective. The battles are fast-paced, with the trailer nailing the frenetic action you can expect.

Overall, FragPunk will be set in a vibrant futuristic universe where a deck of 70 cards determines the rules of the game. The cards will have the power to make or break your next battle, so you’ll have to choose wisely. Some cards can make heads bigger, so you can take out opponents faster. Others create a chain reaction. With its stylish visuals, FragPunk seems to be shaping up to leave a lasting impression in the hero shooter world.
