While Atomic Heart may not go down in history as one of the greatest open-world shooters ever, it could certainly go down as one of the strangest. There’s a lot to appreciate and enjoy in Atomic Heart, and its eccentric storyline, alt-history setting, and out-there character design help set it apart from the crowd. It’s already doubled down on the weirdness with two DLC expansions, and now it’s gearing up for a third. Enchantment Under the Sea is its name, and it sends you beneath the waves to a BioShock-style underwater world.
Atomic Heart, by its own admission, wants its post-launch DLC to be as surreal as possible and continue the base game’s story in unexpected ways. For Enchantment Under the Sea, the FPS game will send you to the bottom of the ocean where you’ll encounter plenty of gruesome new enemies and, according to the extremely metal reveal trailer, a super-intelligent talking dolphin. “With a Twin on his side, Major P-3 dives to the underwater complex to save all humanity,” the trailer’s description on YouTube reads.
While in this underwater world, you’ll not only be inside the walls of this facility but exploring outside it too. P-3 can be seen swimming around and grappling onto massive jellyfish to help propel him along. A separate teaser for the DLC, posted last month, also showed that a giant mechanical eel or sea serpent also patrols the waters. You won’t exclusively be below the surface, though, as you can also see above-ground gameplay featuring drones and a giant clockwork robot patrolling a devastated Facility 3826.
Developer Mundfish also promises some new toys to play with during your adventure in Enchantment Under the Sea, with “new guns and abilities such as Whip and Blaze” teased.
Atomic Heart’s Enchantment Under the Sea DLC arrives on Tuesday, January 28, 2025. Considering the next BioShock game is a fair way off and the Judas release date for Ken Levine’s spiritual successor won’t arrive until later in 2025, fans of the series may find that Atomic Heart’s new expansion is the perfect thing to fill the time.
Now’s actually a good time to pick up the game before the new DLC hits, as it’s currently 67% off on Steam until Monday, December 16. You can grab it here, if you want to.
