Aaron Pierre has already had a banner 2024 after Netflix's Rebel Ridge established him as an action star. Now, Pierre is set to rise to even greater heights as Green Lantern John Stewart in HBO's upcoming series Lanterns.
According to Deadline, Pierre edged out Stephen James to land his new leading role as Stewart, who will be portrayed as a rookie Green Lantern in the series. Pierre previously starred as Malcom X in National Geographic's MLK/X, and he had prominent roles in Foe and The Underground Railroad. The actor is also lending his voice to Disney's upcoming Lion King prequel, Mufasa, as the title character.
Earlier this month, word emerged that Kyle Chandler is in negotiations to play Hal Jordan on the show. The current report notes that Chandler's deal has yet to close, but he's expected to sign on. Jordan is a veteran Green Lantern who was previously played by Ryan Reynolds in the 2011 Green Lantern movie. The Green Lanterns were largely absent from the DCEU, aside from cameo appearances in Justice League.
The premise for Lanterns finds Jordan and Stewart on Earth as they investigate a gruesome series of murders in the American Midwest that may be more than they seem. Chris Mundy (Ozark) is the showrunner of the series, while Lost's Damon Lindelof and comic-book scribe Tom King are among the show's creative team. James Hawes is set to direct the first two episodes of Lanterns, which is expected to begin filming in 2025.
